Amazon.com Review
When you step into a time machine, fax yourself through a "quantum foam wormhole," and step out in feudal France circa 1357, be very, very afraid. If you aren't strapped back in precisely 37 hours after your visit begins, you'll miss the quantum bus back to 1999 and be stranded in a civil war, caught between crafty abbots, mad lords, and peasant bandits all eager to cut your throat. You'll also have to dodge catapults that hurl sizzling pitch over castle battlements. On the social front, you should avoid provoking "the butcher of Crecy" or Sir Oliver may lop your head off with a swoosh of his broadsword or cage and immerse you in "Milady's Bath," a brackish dungeon pit into which live rats are tossed now and then for prisoners to eat.

This is the plight of the heroes of Timeline, Michael Crichton's thriller. They're historians in 1999 employed by a tech billionaire-genius with more than a few of Bill Gates's most unlovable quirks. Like the entrepreneur in Crichton's Jurassic Park, Doniger plans a theme park featuring artifacts from a lost world revived via cutting-edge science. When the project's chief historian sends a distress call to 1999 from 1357, the boss man doesn't tell the younger historians the risks they'll face trying to save him. At first, the interplay between eras is clever, but Timeline swiftly becomes a swashbuckling old-fashioned adventure, with just a dash of science and time paradox in the mix. Most of the cool facts are about the Middle Ages, and Crichton marvelously brings the past to life without ever letting the pulse-pounding action slow down. At one point, a time-tripper tries to enter the Chapel of Green Death. Unfortunately, its custodian, a crazed giant with terrible teeth and a bad case of lice, soon has her head on a block. "She saw a shadow move across the grass as he raised his ax into the air." I dare you not to turn the page!

Through the narrative can be glimpsed the glowing bones of the movie that may be made from Timeline and the cutting-edge computer game that should hit the market in 2000. Expect many clashing swords and chase scenes through secret castle passages. But the book stands alone, tall and scary as a knight in armor shining with blood. --Tim Appelo

From Publishers Weekly
"And the Oscar for Best Special Effects goes to: Timeline!" Figure maybe three years before those words are spoken, for Crichton's new novelAdespite media reports about trouble in selling film rights, which finally went to ParamountAis as cinematic as they come, a shiny science-fantasy adventure powered by a superior high concept: a group of young scientists travel back from our time to medieval southern France to rescue their mentor, who's trapped there. The novel, in fact, may improve as a movie; its complex action, as the scientists are swept into the intrigue of the Hundred Years War, can be confusing on the page (though a supplied map, one of several graphics, helps), and most of its characters wear hats (or armor) of pure white or black. Crichton remains a master of narrative drive and cleverness. From the startling opening, where an old man with garbled speech and body parts materializes in the Arizona desert, through the revelation that a venal industrialist has developed a risky method of time-travel (based on movement between parallel universes; as in Crichton's other work, good, hard science abounds), there's not a dull moment. When elderly Yale history prof Edward Johnston travels back to his beloved 15th century and gets stuck, and his assistants follow to the rescue, excitement runs high, and higher still as Crichton invests his story with terrific period detail and as castles, sword-play, jousts, sudden death and enough bold knights-in-armor and seductive ladies-in-waiting to fill any toystore's action-figure shelves appear. There's strong suspense, too, as Crichton cuts between past and present, where the time-travel machinery has broken: Will the heroes survive and make it back? The novel has a calculated feel but, even so, it engages as no Crichton tale has done since Jurassic Park, as it brings the past back to vigorous, entertaining life. Agent, Lynn Nesbit. 1,500,000 first printing; Literary Guild nain selection; simultaneous large-print edition and audiobook. (Nov. 16)

From School Library Journal
YA-Combining time travel, archaeological exploration, and a power struggle in medieval France, this action-packed story will grab teens' attention from the very first page. ITC, a company located in the New Mexico desert, is at the forefront of the new science of quantum technology. It has secretly developed a means of transporting humans back in time. In the Dordogne region of southwest France, a team of company-sponsored archaeologists and historians is unearthing the remains of a medieval castle, village, and monastery with the goal of developing a major tourist attraction. The words "HELP ME" followed by "4/7/1357" written in ink and on paper used in the 14th century are found at the site. It seems that Professor Johnston, the team leader, demanded that he be transported back to the settlement, and obviously he is in danger there. A rescue effort is launched, and five people are transported back to April 1357: two escorts from ITC and three historians from the Dordogne project. Their time machine allows them 37 hours for the rescue, but within minutes of their arrival, the escorts are killed by a band of horsemen. The three survivors set out to find the missing man, and their race against time results in a gripping tale. YAs will be fascinated by this juxtaposition of modern-day physics with details of a medieval siege.

Couldn't put it down, but...
By Admanc
Like many of the other readers who have ventured to write a review of this book, I found it to be a fascinating read, one in which I literally could not put down the book until I realized it was well past my usual bed time. The subject of time travel, backed-up with just enough (if not too much) scientific reasoning to support the belief in its eventual or imagined possibility, is a thrilling concept. Add to this, the chance to visit an era in which knights roamed western Europe and people lived in and around castles, all described vividly by Crichton as if he had been there, himself.
That said, once the cast of main characters arrives in the High Middle Ages of France, their interactions with the medieval citizens and the non-stop action provides for quick page-turning; however, this is also the point where it begins to get a bit too much to swallow (having swallowed so much already to get to this point). This cast of characters is like a team of superheroes, each one with individual talents, strengths and fatal flaws. One is an expert rock climber, another is nearly fluent in several medieval languages, dialects and weaponry usage, and the last one is a scholar of medieval technologies. As can be easily predicted during the introductions and characterizations of this cast, all of these strengths will certainly come into play later on in the book, and they do. Again and again and again. Sometimes, you wonder when one of them will suddenly sprout wings and say, "Hang on, I learned this cool flying trick while I was an aviation major back at Yale...before I switched to history."
Still, despite the tremendous leaps in superhuman skill and a never-ending supply of luck that Crichton liberally grants his characters, I truly enjoyed the fantasy that oozes from the book and found the imaginative departure from our modern world to be refreshing. I would definitely recommend this book to friends.

A typical Crichton fun-ride
By JLind555
Let's face it... Michael Chrichton is never going to win the Nobel prize for literature. But for pure escapist reading, he's hard to top. And who but Chrichton could make scientific and technological subjects not only interesting, but even fun, for all us technophobes out there? TIMELINE (complete with a bibliography containing 80 references on the Middle Ages and ten on parallel worlds) tells a story of a group of scientists who step into a time machine and travel back to France in the 1300's to rescue a friend who preceded them and got stuck, in a world which proves to be a far more violent and frightening place than Geoffroy or Christine de Pizan ever wrote about. They have 37 hours to find their friend and get him and themselves safely back to the present. The ensuing day and a half turns out to be a typical Chrictonian roller-coaster ride and we know pretty much how it will turn out (and, yes, the villain gets his, and a good job, too), but if you take the book for what it is, it's fun and enjoyable. And some of his references are definitely worth pursuing (check out Michio Kaku's 'Hyperspace', for one). Say what you want about Chrichton's deficits as a writer, he gets you wanting to know more about what he writes about, and that, by itself, makes him a good read.

A Knight to Remember
By A Customer
Having taught Medieval history, I am well aware how infrequently the era is addressed in popular culture. In spite of the cult of Creative Anachronism who recreate this era, few people seldom get it right. It is obvious that Crichton has done his research well. His tale is fascinating and accurate. It has high adventure and great suspense. It is not a classic by any means but it is a highly enjoyable read. It is further amazing that Crichton combines high technology and science with Medieval lore and culture. It is a highly appealing mix and he handles them both very well. This is a perfect light read for anyone who wants to take themselves into another world. My only criticism of it is that it seems to be written towards a screenplay format...so the movie shouldn't be far behind. It would have been nice if it had more of a literary feel. But that is a minor complaint. Mount your steed and charge into this book with abandon. You won't be sorry.

X and the City: Modeling Aspects of Urban Life, by John A. Adam

X and the City, a book of diverse and accessible math-based topics, uses basic modeling to explore a wide range of entertaining questions about urban life. How do you estimate the number of dental or doctor's offices, gas stations, restaurants, or movie theaters in a city of a given size? How can mathematics be used to maximize traffic flow through tunnels? Can you predict whether a traffic light will stay green long enough for you to cross the intersection? And what is the likelihood that your city will be hit by an asteroid?

Every math problem and equation in this book tells a story and examples are explained throughout in an informal and witty style. The level of mathematics ranges from precalculus through calculus to some differential equations, and any reader with knowledge of elementary calculus will be able to follow the materials with ease. There are also some more challenging problems sprinkled in for the more advanced reader.

Filled with interesting and unusual observations about how cities work, X and the City shows how mathematics undergirds and plays an important part in the metropolitan landscape.

"Read this book and come away with a fresh view of how cities work. Enjoy it for the connections between mathematics and the real world. Share it with your friends, family, and maybe even a municipal planning commissioner or two!"--Sandra L. Arlinghaus, Mathematical Reviews Clippings

"It goes without saying that the exposition is very friendly and lucid: this makes the vast majority of material accessible to a general audience interested in mathematical modeling and real life applications. This excellent book may well complement standard texts on engineering mathematics, mathematical modeling, applied mathematics, differential equations; it is a delightful and entertaining reading itself. Thank you, Vickie Kearn, the editor of A Mathematical Nature Walk, for suggesting the idea of this book to Professor Adam--your idea has been delightfully implemented!"--Svitlana P. Rogovchenko, Zentralblatt MATH

"[Y]ou'll find this book quite extensive in how many different areas you can apply mathematics in the city and just how revealing even a simple model can be. . . . A Mathematical Nature Walk opened my eyes to nature and now Adam has done the same for cities."--David S. Mazel, MAA Reviews

"The author has an entertaining style, interweaving clever stories with the process of mathematical modeling. This book is not designed as a textbook, although it could certainly be used as an interesting source of real-world problems and examples for advanced high school mathematics courses."--Theresa Jorgensen, Mathematics Teacher

From the Back Cover

"In X and the City, John Adam proves himself to be a genial and endlessly curious companion as he takes us on a stroll through that fascinating place where reality meets the mathematical imagination. How many squirrels live in Central Park? Should you walk or run in the rain? Anyone who's ever pondered puzzles like these will find this book to be a treat."--Steven Strogatz, Cornell University

"Why did the chicken cross the road? Because the Jaywalker Equation said it had enough time between cars. How does the Ambler Gambler Graph tell if you can blast through a yellow traffic light before it turns red? And why are taxicabs slower than Euclid? These and many other mathematical conundrums are answered in John Adam's admirable new collection."--Neil A. Downie, author of The Ultimate Book of Saturday Science and Vacuum Bazookas, Electric Rainbow Jelly, and 27 Other Saturday Science Projects (both Princeton)

"This is a nice introduction to modeling that draws from questions arising naturally to people who are curious about how cities work. It will certainly interest readers of pop math books and will be useful to teachers of calculus and differential equations who are looking for good examples for their classes."--Anna Pierrehumbert, Community Charter School of Cambridge, Massachusetts

A great intro to Mathematical Modeling
By Ed Pegg Jr
Of the classes I had in college, mathematical modeling was the smallest class I had, but many times over the most valuable. Basically, the lesson is Use What You Know! After learning many other classes, this was the class that answered "What do we need this for?" Calculus, programming, linear algebra -- these are all good to know. Better is to know how to apply them. Even if you don't know the math, knowing that a particular type of problem can be solved with a particular type of math can often be 90% of solving the problem. Math modeling turns your knowledge into a toolbox. Once you get there, you don't even need to really understand some of the tools available in your toolbox -- if you need a particular math tool, you can look at the reference manual for it when you need to.

For X and the City, the author applies many aspects of math modeling to urban living. He looks at Traffic congestion, for example, and asks for the percentage of (waking) time people spend driving. Average commute time in Chicago was 34 minute. He gives the formula for the carrying capacity of a road network. Then he models the effect of adding one more car to a roadway at capacity.

One benefit of a book about modeling -- everything starts in the real world. Every single chapter and section, the first few paragraphs will be completely understandable by everybody, presenting an urban problem (visibility in smog). The next few paragraphs, he explains equations (x^2 = 4a+c) that can solve the problem.

There are hundreds of great little math-related stories in this book, many that I did not know. Also, I didn't know some of this math. All in all, this book added quite a bit to my math modeling toolbox, all in an entertaining, well-written style.

Highly recommended for everybody.

Excellent food for mathematically inquisitive minds
By Elmar Schmidt
John A. Adam is an experienced mathematician with a recognized track record of technical papers and reviews, but also very much committed to teaching his field to students and educated laypersons alike. This book is one in a small but very worthwhile series of popular works by Adam. In 25 chapters it comprises not less than about 75 studies, projects, and morsels, all bound together by their potential appearance or relevance in life in a city, something, which obviously will not decrease in the world of the future.

For this reviewer the dust cover could be a bit more elaborate or artistic, but other than this, and as usual for Princeton University Press hardcovers, the format, haptic quality, choice of paper, and layout are all excellent. The book's graphs and graphics refrain of color, but are always inviting and enlightening. The typography of the very many equations is outstanding. It is calculations and equations, which set the tone and pace for most of this tome.

Here, Adam excels with lucid explanations and proofs throughout, which sometimes does not im- or explicitly spare his reader a few additional steps by paper and pen. So, this is obviously not your coffee table math book to be perused in a few days. When grading the subjects into three stages from easy to difficult, the material falls into these brackets with percentages of about 30:40:30. Whereas the easy and intermediate problems are accessible to anyone with a good command of arithmetics, geometry, trigonometry, basic probability, and real functions, the advanced topics would cater to a typical science major with a good footing in calculus and the beginnings of differential equations.

It should be noted that some 20% of the problems and projects involve "guesstimation" with occasional glimpses on dimensional analysis. This is the art of approximately solving so called Fermi problems by educated guesses, and has been the subject and title of a pocket book, coauthored by Adam.

The individual topics selected by the author are neither arranged by difficulty, nor can they always be grouped together by a certain field of science or math. The many traffic and transportation studies in Chapters 7 to 14 are a notable exception, and actually worth buying the book alone, although some related models, drawn from the literature, leave the reader a bit clueless on which is the prevailing one. For other subjects like those on outdoor optics in Chapters 20 to 23, a field in which the author is well-known by his technical contributions, the "City" theme comes across a bit forced.

The ensuing mix of sorts will not be everybody's favorite, as might be the case for some of the reserved "English" jokes, which this reviewer certainly took delight in. All these minor quibbles would only take half a star away from this one-of-a-kind book, so it got rounded-off to five.

The book closes with about 45 pages of sometimes explanatory, sometimes expansive appendices, and 8 pages of annotated notes and references.

So, anyone looking for something both enlightening and challenging in the mathematics of everyday life should get a copy. John's other books, as well as all those authored by Paul J. Nahin, also with Princeton University Press, would be recommended too.

Addendum: this reviewer has compiled a cross-reference in MS Excel for this book's content and will be glad to provide it to anyone who can reach him through a message here or at SRH University of Applied Sciences, Heidelberg, Germany.

X and the City
By Dottie
Bought this for my daughter for Christmas. He was one of her favorite professors, & she enjoys anything he writes. He is good at making math easy to understand for laymen as well, and not only demonstrates why math is important but why it is FUN.

Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude is a sustained meditation on that which goes away—loved ones, the seasons, the earth as we know it—that tries to find solace in the processes of the garden and the orchard. That is, this is a book that studies the wisdom of the garden and orchard, those places where all—death, sorrow, loss—is converted into what might, with patience, nourish us.

Review
“The Bloomington Community Orchard must have spread its roots into Ross Gay, an Indiana University English professor, as the organic poems in his third collection bear fruit, line by line, with each fresh word or phrase. These are accessible, alive poems that give one the sense of sitting and talking in the poet's kitchen. Often vulnerable and self-conscious in tone, they dig deep in the dirt of memory and unearth powerful images. In ‘Burial,’ the speaker adds his father's ashes to the soil while planting a plum tree, and he sees his mother as a bison, dragging ‘her hooves through the ash / of her heart,’ in ‘c'mon!’ Whether by contemplating the extraordinary within everyday acts (sleeping in clothes, drinking water, buttoning and unbuttoning a shirt), or by entwining past and present as he pays homage to parents, friends, even his former love, Gay embraces the natural cycles of life and death as only an introspective gardener and accomplished poet can.”
—Booklist

"Like one big celebration bursting with joy . . . Gay's poems burst forth in leggy, unexpected ways, zooming in on legs furred with pollen or soil breast-stroking into the xylem. Gay's praise is Whitmanesque, full of manure, mulberry-stained purple bird poop, dirty clothes and hangovers, but also the pleasure of bare feet, of pruning a peach tree, of feeding a neighbor. . . . Whether you're feeling like you have a whole brass band of gratitude or if you're feeling like you only have a rusty horn, read this book. Gay even thanks you for reading it, saying I can't stop my gratitude, which includes dear reader, you for staying here with me, for moving your lips just so as I speak."
—Tess Taylor, NPR, All Things Considered

"Ross Gay is a fresh voice in American poetry. His poems are fast-paced, carefully crafted with great attention to detail of those he writes about and the images that surround him. His poetry consists of beautiful metaphors and startling images."
—Fox Chase Review

"I'm bowled over by how Ross Gay reaches again and again toward stating what's beautiful, what's sweet, what's most emotionally moving to him: he is genuinely 'unabashed.' He is definitely interested in the sentimental, but the poems don't feel remotely treacly to me. They feel bold and wild and weird."
—American Poetry Review

“Ross Gay offers up a muscled poetry of a thousand surprises, giving us a powerful collection that fireworks even the bleakest nights with ardency and grace. Few contemporary poets risk singing such a singular compassion for the wounded world with this kind of inimitable musicality, intelligence, and intoxicating joy.”
—Aimee Nezhukumatathil

“These poems are shout-outs to earth’s abundance: the fruits, blooms, meals, insects, waters, conversations, trees, embraces, and helping hands—the taken-for-granted wonders that make life worth living, even in the face of death.  Lyric and narrative, elegy and epithalamion, intoxicated and intoxicating—expansive, but breathlessly uttered, urgent. Ross Gay has much to say to you—yes, dear reader, you—and you definitely want to hear it.”
—Evie Shockley

“In this bright book of life, Ross Gay lopes through the whole alphabet of emotions, from anger to zest. Merely considering the letter ‘R,’ for example, these poems are by turns racy, rollicking, reflective, rambunctious, raunchy, and rhapsodic. Praise and lamentation rub shoulders, along with elegy and elation, and every page is dazzling.”
—Scott Russell Sanders, author of Earth Works: Selected Essays

“Unabashed gratitude may be what Gay most wants us to notice and appreciate in his work, but getting-to-the-point is the most unabashed gesture of his project. Yet in his most vibrant poems, the getting-there is much more affecting than his destinations. The embracing, intimate sound of his speech is the pleasure.”
—On the Seawall

His poems have appeared in American Poetry Review, Orion, the Sun, and elsewhere.  He is an associate professor of poetry at Indiana University and teaches in Drew University’s low-residency MFA program in poetry. He also serves on the board of the Bloomington Community Orchard.

Gorgeous book through and through
By Jason Walker
While tons of other poets are slaving away in their Towers of I-Don't-Care and Despair-Is-All-There-Is, kissing ass like crazy, Ross Gay is outside getting his hands dirty with plants and words and listening to the birds and the sky. These poems have life, and thus the reader feels more alive after having read them. He sings songs of love and healing while staying true to the tough parts of life. Definitely worth the hype, and he's giving me hope for poetry.

By Jan Worth-Nelson
Wonderful collection. Gay's joyous attention to the loveliness and sadness of life is a balm in a time of otherwise horrid rhetoric. I read it all in one sitting first and then came back to it -- again and again -- for furthering savoring of his languid delivery and tender observations of the world.

This talented young man again produces a collection of thought-provoking and inspiring poetry that needs to be read once for enjoyment then once again to let yourself go deeper into the poet's words. It seems each time some of these poems are read they elicit a new emotion.

Virginia Woolf as Feminist, by Naomi Black

Before the Second World War and long before the second wave of feminism, Virginia Woolf argued that women's experience, particularly in the women's movement, could be the basis for transformative social change. Grounding Virginia Woolf's feminist beliefs in the everyday world, Naomi Black reclaims Three Guineas as a major feminist document. Rather than a book only about war, Black considers it to be the best, clearest presentation of Woolf's feminism.Woolf's changing representation of feminism in publications from 1920 to 1940 parallels her involvement with the contemporary women's movement (suffragism and its descendants, and the pacifist, working-class Women's Co-operative Guild). Black guides us through Woolf's feminist connections and writings, including her public letters from the 1920s as well as "A Society," A Room of One's Own, and the introductory letter to Life As We Have Known It. She assesses the lengthy development of Three Guineas from a 1931 lecture and the way in which the form and illustrations of the book serve as a feminist subversion of male scholarship. Virginia Woolf as Feminist concludes with a discussion of the continuing relevance of Woolf's feminism for third-millennium politics.

Review
"In this convincing new study, Black (political science and women's studies, York Univ., Toronto) demonstrates that Woolf's book-length essay 'Three Guineas' is the clearest, most explicit statement of her feminism―a philosophy Woolf referred to as the 'life of natural happiness.' Black provides a meticulously researched examination of 'Three Guineas,' contending that it is central to Woolf's large body of work. In addition, she carefully considers different versions of the text, along with Woolf's other works; her contacts with the various women's organizations promoting the suffrage movement; and her beliefs about how the world can be transformed into a peaceful society. . . .Highly recommended for academic libraries."―Library Journal, April 1, 2004

"Perhaps none of Virginia Woolf's works has been so little loved and ill-understood as Three Guineas. . . . But now, thanks to Virginia Woolf as Feminist, Naomi Black's learned, tireless argument in favor of this deliberately obdurate work, readers may come to appreciate this most uncompromising of Woolf's feminist pronouncements. Black's major and sustained claim is that Three Guineas is an intrinsically feminist work whose anti-war attitudes cannot be disassociated from Woolf's assault on masculinist privilege and domination. . . . These details, coupled with accurate paraphrase and citation of Woolf's arguments, give Black's study its quiet and insistent authority. Virginia Woolf as Feminist . . . has some new-fashioned, and urgent, literary and historical work to perform, as Black makes clear in the fervid argument she makes for Three Guineas continuing relevance for feminism in the third millennium. She admits Woolf's relative neglect of sexuality and class in her feminist writings, issues that trouble our own time, but in return asks us to consider how much Woolf has to say about women's health issues and the racial politics that also preoccupy us. In closing, she refers to the recent wars in Afghanistan and Chechnya to impress upon us how the feminist objectives underwritten by Woolf's three guineas―'democratization, education, and public professional activity'―still represent a program for political transformation."―Maria DiBattista, Princeton University, English Literature in Transition, 1880–1920, 49:1, 2006

"This book feels remarkably short at 200 pages, and at the end of it I feel―and this is not a criticism―that there is much more to be said about Woolf's feminism: 'We will never, in any simple sense, fully understand either Three Guineas or the feminism it represents'. This is one of those few books that I wish I had been (cap)able to write. The reason I have quoted from it so extensively is that Naomi Black expresses so clearly the arguments she is making."―Stuart N. Clark, Virginia Woolf Bulletin, no. 20, September 2005

"Black . . . provides an excellent account of the textual evolution and development of Woolf's feminism. . . . Black effectively combats the image of Woolf as an aloof artist by enriching our understanding of the feminist contexts in which she worked."―College Literature, 32:2, Summer 2005

"Naomi Black provides a richly detailed account of how Woolf's most controversial feminist book, Three Guineas, was conceived, constructed, and received. Black's powers of historical recovery illuminate the central place of that work in Woolf's career and its continuing challenge to new generations of readers."―Alex Zwerdling, University of California, Berkeley

"Naomi Black has produced a wonderfully astute and compassionate exploration of Virginia Woolf's feminism. Analyses of Woolf's oeuvre have been too long monopolized by literary scholars focused on her novels or by biographers poking into her psychology and sexuality. Black's engaging and beautifully contextualized rereading of Woolf's key essay, Three Guineas, and the works that precede and surround it, is as welcome as it is overdue. The author, a leading feminist political theorist based in Canada and editor of a critical edition of Three Guineas, persuasively and powerfully reclaims Woolf's nonfiction contributions for the history of feminism and the history of political thought."―Karen Offen, Institute for Research on Women and Gender, Stanford University

"Virginia Woolf's process of creating Three Guineas was notoriously long, complex, and scholarly. Naomi Black's book is deeply impressive in its command of that process and the role it played in Woolf's career. Virginia Woolf as Feminist is a book that Woolf scholars will value as a reference work on Three Guineas."―Jessica Berman, University of Maryland, Baltimore County

"As Woolf said,'the triumph of learning is that it leaves something done solidly forever.' We have here an account of all Woolf ever had to say, apart from her fiction, about feminism. And the significance of Three Guineas is established, in its entirety, now and ever more. An invaluable achievement."―Carolyn Heilbrun, author of Writing a Woman's Life

Abstract Art Against Autonomy: Infection, Resistance, and Cure since the 60s, by Mark A. Cheetham

In Abstract Art Against Autonomy, Mark Cheetham provides a revolutionary account of abstraction in the visual arts since the decline of the formalist paradigms in the 1960s. He claims that abstract work remains a vital contributor to contemporary visual culture, but that it performs in a way that is different from its predecessors of the early and mid-twentieth century and cannot adequately be assessed without new models of understanding. Cheetham posits that abstraction has reacted to paradigms of purity with practices of impurity. By examining abstract art since the 1960s within a narrative of infection, resistance, and cure, Cheetham provides an opportunity to rethink paradigmatic genres - the monochrome and the mirror - and to link in new ways the work of artists whose work extends and complicates the tradition of abstract art, including Yves Klein, Robert Rauschenberg, James Turrell, Gerhard Richter, Peter Halley. General Idea, and Taras Polataiko.

either not detailed enough or too detailed to be useful. I like some aspects of the book
By KeriMans
As a professor of neuroanatomy/neurophysiology, I would say that this book is very frustrating for students (and sometimes for me). The images are, as a collective, either not detailed enough or too detailed to be useful. I like some aspects of the book, like the space devoted to clinical applications of the brainstem and cranial nerves. I like the book well enough for my purposes, but undergraduates find it disorganized and jumbled (there are a lot of seemingly unrelated topics jammed into one chapter), whereas I can see the idea behind the grouping of specific topics. This makes a professors job even harder as we try to digest information into little bits, and neuro is HARD for students.

Overall, I would not recommend this to beginners in neuroanatomy (I use Nolte's The Human Brain for that). Clinically, it is fine for undergraduates, but I will use Lundy-Ekmans Neurorehabilitation book for my physical therapy students, but still will add the Nolte for anatomy and pathways. I hope this helps any professor out there who is looking for "THE BOOK" for clinical neuro. I have yet to find one book that does it all.

The notes that my professor uses go along with the book almost word for word. However, the book does give more depth of information than PowerPoint slides. Very helpful for neuro anatomy!
