About the Author
Greene's first novel, Unmentionables, tells the story of slaves and slave holders who lived and loved during the Civil War. Unmentionables won a 2010 Book of the Year award from Foreword Reviews.

Greene's second novel, Detonate, inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's film, Saboteur, is a wrong-man thriller with a hero who is half-black, half-white, half-gay and half-straight.

Greene's third novel, The Winkler Case, is a gay reimagining of the classic noir novel, Double Indemnity by James M. Cain.

Greene is the spouse of the painter James Stephens. They live in Chicago.

A Classic

This book is so good it should be on high school and university reading lists. An amazing civil war story told simply and very smoothly. The characters are interesting and any change in their outlook is developed slowly, instead of in the last few pages like some authors do. Dorothy is the central figure. She is very independent and liberal in her viewpoint, despite the fact she is the daughter of a slave owner near Jackson, Tennessee. She is straight as are most of the characters. There are three gay characters and two of them are slaves who have to deal with slavery and their sexuality. I feel the product description gives too much of the plot away. Just read the book and let it flow into your soul. At $[...]it is the greatest bargain on Amazon.

Unique Story of Slavery in the South!

This is an ambitious novel that grabs the reader's attention with a compellig story about two pairs of lovers in the South during the years of plantation slavery. The characters are well-developed by author David Greene as he is a skillful writer with a fine creative bent. The pace of the story is slow yet appealing and the drama grips the reader. Kudos to author Greene for the subtle yet honest way he handles two controversial topics slavery and homosexuality. If you feel like leisurely reading a finely crafted novel about an historical period of time that is still fascinating, pick up "Unmentionables" and you won't be disappointed.

Book Review: Unmentionables, by David Greene

Unmentionables by David Greene is set in the American Civil War south and recounts the intertwining stories of two couples, Jimmy and Cato, who are gay, black, and enslaved, and Dorothy and William, who are straight, white, and wealthy. If this time period and subject matter seem a tad too distant to relate to your present 21st century lives, fret not. History in this work is used masterfully to transform the specific into the universal. Unmentionables is about love - romantic and otherwise.

Take for instance a conversation that Cato has with Erastus Hicks, a traveling painter from Pennsylvania who arrives at the Tennessee property of Augustus Askew, the slave's master, to paint a portrait of Lucille, Augustus's wife. Cato is engaged to assist Erastus on his commission. When he asks the artist why he paints, Erastus replies:

"It has something to do with yearning...yearning to get hold of what I see. Sometimes I'm overcome, Cato, truly...When I look at this world and see it, I wonder if what I see...is this what others see too?...Because I think if others saw it as I did, they too would be compelled to take up paints and brushes-to try to rope the magnificence of this world onto a canvas...just to try to get hold of it..."

Erastus is later implicated in the romance of William Askew (the son of Augustus and Lucille) and Dorothy (whose parents own Jimmy, Cato's eventual love interest). Erastus's acute perception of the world recurs throughout the novel and seems to mirror that of the book's author, David Greene, who writes with exceptional insight about both the human and non-human condition. In the following excerpt, for example, Mr. Greene provides a wonderful description of how the character named Venus, who happens to be a dog, looks upon her two-legged, upright friends:

"Then again, all humans were at a disadvantage. Walking as they did with their noses so high up off the ground, one could hardly expect them to catch most of the essence of the world. For what was the earth if not a sniffable, whiffable, smorgasbord? The world was a bouquet of fumes and traces, redolent, spicy, sometimes sweet or savory, sometimes foul or fetid. There were stinks of rot-and there were lovely perfumes. There were damp smells like creek water, or wet grass, or spring mud. There were dry smells like hay in the hot sun, or the grainy, dusty smell of weeds, browned and dessicated from days without water. There were exciting erotic smells of urine, sweat and body aromas: those powerful, heady wafts that brought the atoms of one body into the nose of another. How could humans not read these sexual signatures, the intimate imprint, the very particular smell of each being, traveling like a cloud of emissions, the fumes of physicality, dragged in a trail of musk behind all creatures?"

Mr. Greene's great appreciation of all that is sensual is equaled by his intellectual understanding of relationships that cross established racial, social, sexual, and political boundaries. In a style that is straightforward without being encyclopedic, poetic without being over-embellished, and informative without being didactic, he achieves that balance of form and content required for a successful, and, in this case, beautiful work of art. When Erastus explains to Dorothy why he has chosen his itinerant lifestyle, he states:

"As I said before, so much that is beautiful in life happens in an instant. But one must contrive to be in the right place at the right time and have one's eyes open."

For me, one of those instants began when I received my copy of Unmentionables.

This poem inspired me to pursue poetry. When I first came across this poem many years ago I was a new poet and in an identity struggle. Since 10 years old and through my 20s I had read ferociously philosophy, psychology and theology in order to find meaning in my existence. The foundation of all I believed of how the world worked however was cracked by one encounter that made me realize perhaps the world was not something you could piece together through various theories and I no longer knew exactly where I fit and what I believed. Spending so much time reading Freud, other psychologists, and so much of the philosophy of Plato, Aristotle, existentialists, Kierkegaard, CS Lewis, Martin Buber- though it had all enriched my life, it had all come to a tragic end in terms of experience. After all it was just mortal men's thoughts, that often coincided with their own experience and then projected onto the world. I was tired now of looking for answers in books. I thought I would never in fact read again, until the day I discovered poetry- short discourses of thoughts that could often be read in less than a minute, but sometimes took awhile to unpack. It was a new way to convey and create meaning- through words, their sound and creativity, not just their definition and logical connections. The world of poetry exploded for me and I would spend days reading ordinary people's poems. I was so enthralled by how people communicated their experiences that I commented practically on every poem I came across on www.allpoetry.com. I didn't care if it was a sophisticated sonnet or a poem filled with unintentional spelling errors- both were brilliant- both were people attempting to send out a message - to say something that came from the center of their own passion, perception experience and understanding of life. I realized that we are ALL without exception poets, just like we are all without exception theologians (which would be another review). Poetry is everyone's lifeblood. If people can not hear you or can not acknowledge you in the logical world, they can in the poetry world-someone will get every word you are saying and will be able to relate to it. Others will take your words and give them new meaning based in their own experiences. But as a poet you will have been the catalyst to give the reader the means to verbalize what was lying silently within them. That is what Desert Stones did for me.

When I first discovered poetry, I first discovered this poem. I was very intimidated by it. To me it was a poem way beyond my ability to craft or understand yet I went back to it time and time again. It enthralled me, it drew me in because it gave me words for the collapse of my own inner world and the struggle of meaning in the outer events of my life. It gave me the words to express the world of darkness that is so shrouded in light that many people just will not admit to it. Today, this darkness can not be denied. This poem exposes that darkness. And yet it doesn't leave us without hope. There are archetypes we can cling to. We need to know about the darkness because it can choke us. It can disguise itself as light, when it's roots are darkness. The shadows and the fear we experience in those moments of anxiety are real. But once we expose the roots if darkness as ignorance, we are free from it. It's around us, we may even be forced to live in it, but it can not hurt us, because the root of us is light and true light dispels darkness of its power. We can walk through it without being afraid. We look back through our journey of darkness, we can walk through or desert moments and realize just how parched and thirsty we were. We are left with our own experience. We are left with the divine.
Both of these elements pour themselves out in poetry. Every philosopher, theologian, psychologist, man, woman and child is a poet. Poetry makes sense of life, it makes sense of me. You may never understand this poem- this allusiveness of its meaning is fully intentional by its author, but you will find profound poetry in reading this. Let your own experience be seen through it, and let the poetry speak to you. It will, and you will come away with a richer experience and understanding of yourself and the world around you as well as an inspiration for poetry. If you are looking for hope, you will find that which you can cling to. You will be able to distinguish the darkness from the light, the fleeting from the eternal. There IS danger as the book so poignantly warns but there is wisdom, strength and hope. I do not think the author will mind if I reveal the outline of the book. It will show you the exciting highs and lows of journey that awaits you. It's like listening to a concerto- it will captivate you if you can hear and visualize it's music and story. And don't be afraid to take it a part and just see each sentence as poetry and how each was created- that is how you will grow as a poet.

Another wonderful edition of Russel McGuire's poetry. Worth reading over and over.

Mr. McGuire's poems are easy to read in silence yet sound good when read aloud. The Desert Stones is no exception.

I like the arrangements on paper (or Kindle). They are interesting to see and challenge the brain. This makes them worthy of repeated views and invite the reader to reinterpret.

I have this in paper and it is a lovely read.

Like "Nebulae Cocktails", I had a problem viewing the layout on my Kindle at first. A recent update to the Kindle.app has fixed the problem and it now reads as the author intended, much to the benefit of the reader. This is good as my wife has absconded with my print copy and I may not get it back.

Like Mr. McGuire's other works, this is a part of my permanent library. I shal enjoy reading these again. Well done!

This classic holiday cookie collection is simply presented with a compact, basic layout and a few charming little illustrations throughout the pages. Sometimes, less really is more, and this book is loaded with wonderful recipes! Produced by Southern Living Books, which always provides a fabulous feast for foodies, "Christmas Cookies" has the feeling and flavor of 1986, the year it was printed. This is a very good thing! If you think there's nothing new to make for the holidays, then step back in time for some tasty treasures from the past. The book sections are divided by the type of cookie, and my favorite was the final chapter: "Foreign Cookies". Somehow those wonderful butter and spice cookies, and cookies filled with jam and dried fruit and nuts bring to mind the seasonal scents of a Christmas kitchen. Suggestions for Santa's cookie plate: "Croesus Squares"; "Date-Nut Cookies"; "German Christmas Cookies"; and "London Bars". For the person who has everything, including a sweet tooth, a gift of a homemade assortment of delectable, devourable cookies would be much appreciated and long remembered.

I had this book a long time ago, and used it for every occasion that called for cookies. It has the best recipes and I would greatly recommend this book to anyone who's looking for a "cookie" book!
