Robert Kelly, PhD, is an associate professor in the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Calgary, where he teaches studio art, curriculum theory, design, and creativity theory and practice. He has been a featured keynote speaker at conferences and workshops across Canada, speaking on creativity and educational practice. or useless. Absolutely do NOT rely on this guide to ...

Just got back from a 3 week trip to Taiwan.

To echo a previously-made comment, the MRT map for Taipei is incorrect.

The guide did list a wide range of tourist attractions and places to visit. However, in many cases, the directions and maps were either non-existant, misleading, or useless. Absolutely do NOT rely on this guide to provide directions for the places of interest. We spent over an hour searching for the black-faced spoonbill reserve just north of Tainan, and had to stop at least half a dozen times to ask for directions.

Also, I disagree with the comment in the book that credit cards are widely accepted. This was not my experience at all. Bring plenty of cash. Apparently, one can get cash from cirrus network ATMs in the widely-distributed 7-11 stores all over Taiwan, but this fact is buried in one short paragraph at the end of the book, and I only discovered it on my last day in Taipei.

A wide range of interesting locations are described in the book. However, perhaps to avoid offending sensibilities, no mention of the aboriginal art sites which include - ahem - giant phalluses.

What to Do and Where to Go in Taiwan

As a fan of Lonely Planet guides, I always have a high expectation.  This newest edition for Taiwan does a reasonable job of meeting those expectations. However, there are a few areas it falls short. There is little discussion of the widespread availability of free WiFi (Taipei has some 10,000 hotspots). The listing of hotels and restaurants are rather sparse, given the enormous number of both.  Nevertheless, I found some real food gems off the beaten track that were listed.

Although not large, Taiwan is amazingly diverse from the crowded cities on the west coast to the central mountain range to the tropical south.  Lonely Planet describes the highlights and diverse activities in each region. I did not find any major tourist attraction missing that some reviewers complained about.   But it would be naive to rely on one guidebook to be the source of all information on a country you are visiting. I used LP as the first level, and then web searches to dig more deeply when necessary. That being said, Taiwan has loads of tourist information booths at many locations, which always had English maps. 

The introductory section covers the basics that you need to know in preparing to travel to Taiwan.  The lists of top highlights and suggested itineraries helps you select the top sights.   The book is then divided into geographic regions.  Without access to a car, the rural parts of Taiwan can be more challenging, but LP usually lists the train, subway or bus lines.  

I used the Kindle version. It was more convenient to move around to internal links. The maps were so-so for navigating around, but I had other apps for that.  The Kindle search function is pretty rudimentary, and requires exact spelling. This can be challenging for Taiwan, that has a bit of a free-for-all approach to transliteration of Chinese.

Browsing through the LP tails guide will give you loads of ideas of where to go and what to do.  However, it would be wise to complement with other sources of information.

Concise and informative

I used this book on my recent trip to Taroko Gorge, and it proved a great source of valuable information. The book is well organized and informative, in a concise way. I also used it when temple-hopping in Taipei, and relished the informative descriptions of temple art.

Only so much information can be placed within a limited page count, but this edition does a capital job of giving you the highlights and suggesting noteworthy places to stay, eat and and visit among myriad options. The Taipei section is much improved over the last edition, with a number of things that had been mysteriously removed now restored.

Sure, as one reviewer said, the new MRT line is not included, but that's because the book was completed before that line opened. LP has a policy of not publishing future maps, hence the omission.

My only real complaints are 1) the Top 20 section at the beginning of the book in the previous edition has been reduced to Top 15. 2) The shopping section for Taipei should be more expansive. The great outdoor shops like TingSanIou and MetrOasis should be included.

I saw the creative juices flow and I also saw the frustration when life wasn’t going well. I acted as his bodyguard when needed and in the end, of course, I was one of his nurses.”

The Last Twelve Years -- 1979-2001

I will say, on the one hand, I am not a "die-hard" Queen fan, nor am I a "die-hard" Freddie Mercury fan. On the other hand, I do enjoy Queen's music.
The intent on buying this book, as in any biography, is to learn about the birth, career, and so on of the person in which the biography is based. That is not the case for this book.
At first, I was a bit dissapointed to discover that I would not learn about Freddie's birth, childhood, his early carrer, the founding of Queen as a band, as well as the birth of Queen's successes.
The book opens in 1979. That is when the author, Peter Freestone, began working for Queen; his original job was to make all the costume changes ready, during Queen's concert performances. His job descriptions, and responsibilities increased as time went on, and he began working solely for Freddie, himself.
'I was Freddie's chief cook and bottle washer, waiter, butler, secretary, cleaner..and agony aunt',writes Peter Freestone (quoting from the back cover, to give an insight as to the various responsibilities he had while employed by Mercury.)
'I travelled the world with him, I was with him at the highs and came through the lows...I acted as his bodyguard when needed and in the end, of course, I was one of his nurses.'
This is, indeed as the title states, an intimate look at the man who is Freddie Mercury, written by someone who became one of Freddie's closest, most trusted friends.
But, it only covers the 12 years that Freestone knew, and worked for him.
The last 2 chapters are especially touching. Peter Freestone was there when Freddie passed away, in 1991, and he shares a very personal account of the goings on before, during, and after his death.
What I learned, and appreciated about this intimate memoir, was how generous, and giving Freddie was. He was a loyal friend. He treated those who worked for him as close friends.
This book was excellent reading, for what it was; and what it was, was an intimate portrait, getting to know Freddie Mercury on a personal level (kinda like getting a backstage pass, so to speak), learning things that would be, otherwise private.

Pleasant Memories of Freddie Mercury...

I truely enjoyed reading this book. I have, for many years been a Freddie Mercury fan and great admirer of his music. I was very apprehensive about buying this book, as most often books as such are rarely kind to the individual whom they are written about. But I felt that this book characterized Freddie Mercury more as a "person" rather than this huge "rock star" (which he was) and gave some delightful and colorfull insight into his daily life. The book is filled with many stories and incidents that depict his life style more in terms of his love of music, the band, his friends, his home and his cats. There are stories demonstrating his sensitive character, as well as his over all kindness and generousity. The fact that he was gay is secondary in this book, but it was not ignored either. If you are a Freddie Mercury fan I know you will enjoy this book very much. The photo section in the book is good...but for Freddie Mercury fans there are never enough pictures.
I myself have reread my book several times and enjoy it just as much each time, sometimes reading something I missed before. Peter Freestone remembered his friend kindly.

Hands Clasped

Peter Freestone travelled over hill and dale with Freddie, and holds very little back in his account of life with one of rock's most "mercurial" stars.

Was he the man who knew Freddie best? He claims to be, and yet there are a number of fans and other authorities who feel he has claimed this intimate title without the back story to back it up. He knew the tragic star for eleven years, the last years before his death from AIDS, and he even became kind of a nurse to him, so there were elements of Freddie's life he had an eyewitness view of, and saw things no other mortal was ever privileged to see.

The music, the madness, the mirth, all are aspects that Peter isn't so hip on, but I dare any reader to go through this book right to the end and fail to shed a tear as the implications of Freddie's diagnosis begin to take root, and people begin to realize what this will mean to Freddie himself and to all those who loved Queen and rock music too. Peter F. was there, amd he writes sensitively about a difficult issue. Elsewhere his writing is humorous and sparkly, with a bit of an outsider edge, when he describes the ingenious ways he thought of to protect Freddie from the punters and paparazzi, but at the end you will feel your heart in your throat.
