More romantic than Fallen

Stayed up all night to finish this amazing book. Eureka and Ander's story is so heartbreaking. I loved the first book Teardrop but I think this one is my favorite. The setting is so beautiful and I loved all the new characters Eureka got to meet, especially the gossip witches! I could really see and feel everything Eureka went through and even cried at the ending. If you like love stories and surprises, this book is for you.

I thought the book was hard to read through out the entire book. I re-read the first book before even cracking the cover of "Waterfall". It just seemed as though the story line went from smooth and a good story to difficult and hard to grasp onto. There were too many out there concepts in the book. Some things needed to be explained more and I felt like some things should have just been left out of the book completely. I was excited to buy the second in the series and now I regret spending the money at all.

Yes I get this is fantasy BUT come on. Nothing makes sense. Realities don't even come close to connecting.

I really liked the first book and the characters are pretty decent. The story just...lacks.

And the ending. It's kind of a cliffhanger but how could Eureka come back from it. Like a soap opera I am sure she will be resurrected. Or maybe Eureka/Atlas will develop something with Brooks. Or is she wanting to be with Ander.

This review makes no sense just like the book.

Paul Griffiths is University Professorial Research Fellow at the University of Sydney. He is the author of What Emotions Really Are: The Problem of Psychological Categories (1997) and Sex and Death: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Biology (with K. Sterelny, 1999). He is the editor of Trees of Life: Essays in Philosophy of Biology (1992), Biology and Philosophy (2000) and Cycles of Contingency: Developmental Systems and Evolution (with S. Oyama and R. D. Karola Stotz is an Australian Research Fellow at the University of Sydney in the project 'Postgenomic Perspectives on Human Nature'. Not a textbook. Sloppy editing.

I loved the book Sex and Death: An Introduction to Philosophy of Biology co-authored by Paul Griffiths. Therefore, I chose to read his new book on genetics.

But it turns out that this book is just a disaster. It all starts with the print and layout. Though Cambridge University Press is one of the most prestigious scientific publishers, they were very sloppy in editing this book. Mistakes in punctuations are all over the place, and the print is very bad, too. The letters are printed in some kind of grey instead of black, and the resolution is very low. There are even some black spots on various pages. Furthermore, there's too much free space on the outer edges of the pages, so that it's hard to read the text on the right of the left pages.

Let's come the the content. I have the impression that the authors weren't really motivated in writing this book. Their style of writing is dry lacking any kind of passion or excitement. I thought it were an introduction to philosophical issues in genetics, but it's not. It's rather a summary of a research project conducted by the authors. It's not a textbook that guides students through the basic terminology. For example, I found the Wikipedia article on "operons" much more understandable than the explanation in Section 3.3.2 of this book. In Section 4.1.1, the authors summarize results of the genome projects. This section is so dense that it's totally incomprehensible. Too many unimportant details. Too many cited papers.

closer to the ultimate goal,philosophy of genetics

as an old geneticist,started my career as post grad and instructor in the year dr Griffiths was born(1962),I think that genetics deserves its own philosophy.the presnt book is a closer step towards this goal.however,it is not fair to state that genetics just influenced life sciences,it transformed them into genetically based disciplines(the end of biology as we know it).i tried to demonstrate that,qualitatively and quantitavely in my forthcoming book"rethinking genetics".

while it is difficult to claim that the book rejected "genocentrism",authors correctly mentioned that there is no need for anything more grandiose to explain the "central"place of genes.moreover,their treatment of what is genetic and what is genic is more convincing than that of sarkar in "genetics and reductionism'.

this introduction was heavily overloade by a "terminological show":exogenetics(why not exogenic),environmental niche(what about ecological),eco evo devo biology(evo devo can suffice),crick information(?).............etc

references lack some important sources,let me mention few:different philosophies of genetics/goldschmidt,the extended phenotype/dwkins(his only serious work?),what was classical genetics/Kenneth waters ,philosophical writings of myer-monod-jacob...etc

finally,i have to confess that I don't like the message coveyed by the cover image(dna inactivation),pls look for other in the next editions of this good book.

I am not a scientist, and I do not have any background in modern genetics and the human genome. This book takes a macro look at the science and draws it all together in some intellectually stimulating themes. Well written, though I cannot judge its scientific accuracy.

Richard Schmid's newer book Alla Prima is much better. Try to find the Paints Landscapes in a library - its not worth paying over 200 dollars for. Paints landscapes has mostly black and white pictures which shows how dated the book is. Check out his website for the really good videos also.

I stumbled upon this book in a library and knew I had to own it so I could study each and every word. Richard Schmid paints landscapes like no one else! (If you don't beleve me check out his website and you will buy this book! ) My paintings improved immediately! I take it with me when I paint now! He gives clear steb by step guides but this book is clearly above and beyond a "how to paint landscapes" book. I'm now saving my "starving artist" pennies to buy his "Alla Prima" book!

Better then others have claimed

I rarely posts reviews but felt obliged to add one here to clarify the value of this book. I own Schmid's "Alla Prima" (which is excellent) and have also enjoyed many of his DVDs.

I was pleasantly surprised when this book arrived because it also excellent, but in a different vein then "Alla Prima". For one, this book predates the other by several decades so naturally the color pages are going to be fewer. This book is dense with the nuts & bolts of Richard Schmid's approach to the landscape. There is much more rudimentary (but not basic) information here that was not appropriate for the higher level approach of "Alla Prima". Plus there are many more examples. So what if they're black & white. The text that accompanies them, with Richard's insights to each painting, is worth it.

So buy "Alla Prima" and watch some of his DVDs to acquire an appreciation to Richard Schmid's approach to painting and to also whet your artistic appetite for more. And once you are hungry for more, buy this landscape book to "savor" his painting instruction.

Didn't answer the question I bought the book for

My older references are in storage and I thought it would be neat to have a c++ ref on my kindle. It says reference and the reviews are good, so I bought it.

I wanted to be reminded of how to use variable numbers of parameters for macro defines. Forget whether this is a good idea. It's a language feature and I want to know how it works.

#define with parameters is handled in one paragraph which doesn't even include the possibility of multiple parameters, let alone any details. Given this, I was curious to see if there was any discussion of the continuation-line functionality in the preprocessor. Nope. Not there.

I'm sure this is a wonderful c++ primer as the other reviews indicate. My spot check demonstrates that this is in no way a complete reference.

Even if you don't like a coding style, completeness allows you to read the code of others.

So I'm out $28 bucks and my question isn't answered. oh well.

"Complete Reference" far from complete

I'm a developer who understands basic C++ concepts. I bought this book so that I could understand more advanced features of the language, and I've found it sorely lacking. Most topics are covered briefly and show only extremely obvious examples, which are not helpful in understanding the mechanisms involved.

This book may have some value for programmers new to C++, but its claim to be a "complete reference" is a wild exaggeration.

Great as a tutorial and as a reference

Herbert Schildt's "C++: The Complete Reference" is a gargantuan tome indeed. It fully covers the C++ syntax, and gives useful, working examples that demonstrate each of the language's features. If you're a professional (or hobbyist) working on a project and need to quickly look up how to use some part of C++ syntax, then this book is absolutely perfect. If you're a developer who has spent his/her life working in C and want to (or need to!) learn C++, then you'll find this book's content well organized and you'll be able to find what you need instantly.

Also, this book seems as though it could function as a tutorial for the complete beginner. Now, I didn't learn C++ from this book initially, so I can't really speak from experience, but the book DOES cover the entire syntax and it does so in an unpretentious and very clear manner. The only thing that it's missing for newbies is exercises -- but if you're really serious, you'll make up your own little tasks, or try to extend/modify the examples.

I program video games as a hobby and have used this as a reference countless times in various projects. I've obviously bought other reference books ("C++ in a Nutshell", and Stroustrup's tome), but I find that this book is my most used and most beloved reference.

About a decade ago, psychologists began exploring the commonalities among alcohol and drug abuse, smoking, and obesity. The term sub­ stance abuse evolved into the current concept of addictive behaviors, which recognizes similarities with other behaviors that do not involve consummatory responses (e. g. , pathological gambling, compulsions, sexual deviations). Professional societies and journals now have been founded in both Britain and the United States with the purpose of focus­ ing on research and treatment in the area of addictive behaviors. As the field has evolved, new models have emerged to address the questions and puzzles that face professionals. This volume examines some of these current issues and, in particular, explores common pro­ cesses of change that seem to cut across the addictive behaviors. The chapters are based on papers presented at the Third International Con­ ference on Treatment of Addictive Behaviors, which was held at North Berwick, Scotland, in August of 1984. The conference was organized around an integrative model of stages and processes of change that has been useful in organizing new knowledge about how to intervene with addictive behaviors. This model is set forth by its authors, Jim Prochaska and Carlo DiClemente, in Chapter 1. In Chapter 2, Fred Kanfer ex­ pounds his own model of self-regulation, which overlaps nicely with the Prochaska-DiClemente framework and provides a behavioral-theoretical context.
