Best Adventure Time book they could have ever made, no lie.

[[VIDEOID:mo2RQPWMEXE13FV]]I absolutely love this book, the lore is incredible. The pictures are so bright and so vivid. It has everything that you could ever want to know about Adventure Time, you really won't find another Adventure Time book as informative and fun to read as this.

Not A "Making Of." Something Better.

If you are looking for a book with lots of specific information about the making of Adventure Time, this is not that book. I see another reader has criticized The Adventure Time Encyclopedia for not providing behind-the-scenes trivia, show history, or interviews with the cast and creators.

While that may be a disappointment for certain AT fans, I have a very different response as a fan both of the show and of author Martin Olson, best known for the instant cult classic "Encyclopaedia of Hell" (and as the voice of Hunson Abadeer, a character seemingly reflective of Olson's cult celebrity as the evil-oid EOH author).

Rather than a research-based tell-all about Adventure Time, this book is something which could only have been written by Olson.

With so much AT information already available on the Wikia site, blogs, features and interviews on youtube, etc., it seems Pendleton Ward and company wanted to take this book to another level. So, instead of hiring someone to gather data and conduct interviews, they got Olson to bring his unique imagination and warped sense of humor to "The Adventure Time Encyclopedia," creating something truly original though difficult to categorize.

Isn't that just like them?

Equal parts fanporn, comedy, and bizarre experiment in meta-literature, Encyclopaedia of Adventure Time is for those who seek more than just a typical "Making Of" book. So, for Glob's sake, curl up with a nice cup of mallow tea and vibe into the extreme algebraicism of this utterly strange book. Of which, some parts seem to be alive. Or are a fanzine scribbled insanely by the Ice King. And all of which is hilariously littered with handwritten notes by Finn, Jake and Marceline (Also: Artwork. Beautiful, detailed, artwork by Tony Millionaire and Mahendra Singh. Please).

Even knowing Olson's previous work, TATE is not what I was expecting. Which is totally rhombus.

Beautifully designed and entertaining

I was pleasantly surprised to find this encyclopedia full of new Adventure Time art. It's written from the point of view of Marceline's dad, king of the Nightosphere, with faux-written-in comments by Marceline, Finn, and Jake (I'm pretty sure multiple authors commenting on the main body makes it experimental post-modern awesome! Unfortunately they never say much). It's more than just an alphabetical listing of most of the Adventure Time characters; things like Princess Bubblegum's Travel Guide to Ooo and the Ice King Fiona and Cake Zine give it a miscellany feel.

The design is really impressive for licensed cartoon merchandise. Children will probably like all the pictures, and teens/adults can enjoy Abadeer's delightful circumlocutions, although he does get annoyingly hyper-self-aware (and the tone of his writing is inconsistent). The writing could have been a bit better, but it's still entertaining. I chuckled more than once! If you're a fan of the show you should totally buy this book! You will love it. If you're buying it for a child, just know that it assumes the reader has a large vocabulary (words like "masticating" "ninny" and "bevy" are common, which might discourage a 10-year-old. Or it might encourage them, who knows).

This Encyclopedia makes this reader happy, nay, giddy, when its contents enter range of her orbicular sight sensors (did you find that circumlocution funny or annoying? More of the same awaits you in this Encyclopedia).

About the Author

Julien Lange

Julien Lange is a 34-year-old IT expert in software engineering. He started developing on an Amstrad CPC464 with the BASIC language when he was 7 years old. He later learned Visual Basic 3/4, then VB.NET, and then C#. For several years until the end of his education, he developed and maintained several e-business websites based on PHP and ASP.NET. After his graduation, he continued to learn more and more about software, which included software architecture and project management, and always tried to acquire new skills. Since 2011, he has been working as an IT project manager on the lead management middleware of DSI Axa France (a French insurance company). This middleware is based on the SOA architecture. As this middleware is consumed by frontend users exposed on the Internet, performance is the top priority each time he delivers a new release of the system. Scalability and robustness are really important in his everyday work. He first developed an interest in mobile development in 2009. After discovering the massive potential of iPhone games and software, he decided to find an improved game engine, which would allow him to concentrate only on the main purpose of a game: developing a game and not a game engine. His choice was Unity 3D. Later, he took some time to learn the native iOS Objective-C language, which was quite difficult for him due to its language particularity and finally learned Swift since its first apparition in 2014. In addition to his main work as an IT consultant, he created iXGaming.com in December 2010. He currently has several projects in mind, including a game based on a French board game and a new website that delivers new services to developers. He is searching for a few partners to work with.

Appalling. Really, just… appalling.

This book verges on the surreal in its awfulness. It reads like a 1982 VCR manual translated from Japanese into English by a native speaker of Italian. Truly - nearly every paragraph has some terrible linguistic convolution stunning in its cluelessness. Imagine 2001's HAL, had he been an autistic child. The author thinks nothing of beginning any number of successive sentences with the same words and seems to regard all articles and conjunctions as interchangeable. Misspellings, typos, syntax & tense errors, and word misusage all abound. The result is a droning, bizarrely robotic glossolalia overflowing with numbing repetition punctuated by strange quirks and distractions, all of which achieves the goal of rendering an already esoteric subject opaque.

Nor does the ugliness stop there. The ebook includes delights such as entire pages with a single sentence and other layout disasters that suggest a computer generated text untouched by any human being. Vast expanses of white space interrupt the text; perhaps half the pages are more than half blank. It appears to be a draft website or classroom presentation dumped to text. Printed, there'd be enough room to write an entirely new (and one hopes, better) text in the white space provided.

Perhaps the author is a non-native speaker of English, but that in no way excuses the publisher for releasing this half-baked abortion. One can only assume Packt employs no editors and vetted this shameful mess not at all.

Better communication in your relationships...(the why)

I have taken a few personality assessments. This is only the second one that has caught my attention. The assessment was simple but effective. I was surprised by the descriptive traits. It nailed me to a tee. If you want to understand your relationships better I recommend. It's all about how we as individuals process incoming data. Also, the "labels" are easy to remember. ...very good study!!

Best Access book I have ever read

This is one of the most intelligent books I have ever read on understanding Access... As well as one of the clearest computer books I have ever read. And as software trainer, I have stopped reading quite a few. This book should be on the business bookshelf every public library because its a clear primer on Access and data analysis. I was hooked on the author's clear sense of purpose and desire to communicate within the first few pages. I bought the book on the spot in Barnes & Noble, even though I knew I could get it cheaper here. I sent additional copies from here as gifts to friends who I knew had long struggled with Access. I should clarify, this book is not about Microsoft Access, but about using Access as a tool to create meaningful analysis of your business data. The author's breakdown of business intelligence is worth the price of the book alone. I have not given many books a 5 star rating, but I give it here without reservation.

Be careful for a books with all reviews in "5 stars"

This book, Data Analysis with Microsoft Access 2010: From Simple Queries to Business Intelligence, provides a good description of user interface functionality available in Access 2010 with some discussions of business intelligence and data warehouse. The description/discussion is basic, the approach is simple, and the level is introductory.

Unfortunately, the book author did not provide any sample file for the examples discussed either for download or in an attached CD for most chapters until Chapter 15. (This book has 16 chapters and two appendices.) One value of having a book is organized information and this book does provide that, though at the very elementary level. This book provides quite a few simple queries as examples. They can serve as an introduction to get foot wet. Access Help does the same. To learn Access 2010 user interface as provided in this book, a user can press F1 key to search the help file and read the relevant information when using Access 2010.

This book is not for a reader who is serious in acquiring knowledge in Data Analysis and/or Business Intelligence.

In all, there are two small files available for download from [...]. These two files are "SalesDatabase.zip" and "DataWarehouse.zip."

The first zip file is a single table database (SalesDatabase.accdb) with a few additional files:
1. 1 table: GeographicSales (9 records and 3 fields)
2. 2 queries: SalesByState and UniqueRegions
3. 2 forms: MainMenu and SalesByState
4. 1 report: Sales By State
5. 1 macro: Instructions
After unzip, the size of this database is 520 KB.

This file is used as an example for Forms, Macros, and Reports. This book devoted 11 pages to discuss this file in its Appendix A.

The data warehouse database has
1. 16 tables and
2. 10 queries (2 for Append, 5 for Make Table, and 3 for report/analysis).

Chapter 15, The Data Warehouse, uses this database as its main example. This book also devoted 3 pages in its Appendix B to discuss this database, which briefly describes the process of how this database can be built. This database has 904 KB and is a vanilla database, e.g., just a collection of tables and queries, and no relationship between tables is defined.

I am not convinced that "this is the only book you'll need to gain a working knowledge of Access, and how it can be used for data analysis." This claim is misleading.

Informative & Easy to Follow

I picked up this book because I needed to buff up my MS Access skills for a job as a data collector. I've used Access in the past to do very simple data entry but this new position requried me to create, store, maintain and edit tables within Access. This book very clearly teaches you how to run the processes in easy to read step instructions.

It isn't very dry like others and makes for a great, informative read.
