Not your high school history book (thank goodness)

This is history written the way it happens; not neatly packaged into tidy little sanitized chapters, but sliding around from one event to another (and another, and another). The author covers a lot of ground (1500 years or so) with no intention of providing in-depth analyses, and suggests that the engaged reader follow up on items that are of particular interest. In-text references are unobtrusive, and end notes give direction to appropriate sources to get you started.
The narrative does not attempt a 'straight line' approach to events, instead working through general subjects while linking disparate events into the whole. Forays into earlier times and other places provide adequate background without bogging down, while comparisons and contrasts to latter-day events provide interesting context and perspective. Pictures appropriate to each subject matter under discussion are scattered throughout, giving the eyes a break from unremitting text.
Along with an outstanding overview of the more formal historical aspects of human presence in the mid-Willamette area, the book offers frequent glimpses of smaller human touches. Despite 150 years of family history in the area I had never heard of 'divorce trees' - although they make perfect sense and it is likely that many of my ancestors were quite familiar with the notion.
I recommend this book to those seeking an enjoyable look at how lesser-known pieces of our history fit into the 'approved' version of events. I never understood why or how school textbooks turned history into a boring subject. This is not a problem with "The Story of Corvallis".
