Very nice comprehensive reivew
By Odyssey
I am not big on writing reviews; however, this book deserves a comment. The chapters are very well written and takes you in depth with every disease. I like the lymphoid neoplasms chapters little more than myeloid. They are written better than the WHO and enable you to understand the background and the classifications in depth. The only draw back I would say is sometime I feel it contains a lot of academic nonsense; but I must say it is limited to a few number of pages. Good review to use before during your fellowship and may be a bench review during sign-out. The online version of the book is excellent. Overall, it is worth buying it.

Putin's Russia: Life in a Failing Democracy, by Anna Politkovskaya

A searing portrait of a country in disarray, and of the man at its helm, from "the bravest of journalists" (The New York Times)

Hailed as "a lone voice crying out in a moral wilderness" (New Statesman), Anna Politkovskaya made her name with her fearless reporting on the war in Chechnya. Now she turns her steely gaze on the multiple threats to Russian stability, among them President Putin himself.

Putin's Russia depicts a far-reaching state of decay. Politkovskaya describes an army in which soldiers die from malnutrition, parents must pay bribes to recover their dead sons' bodies, and conscripts are even hired out as slaves. She exposes rampant corruption in business, government, and the judiciary, where everything from store permits to bus routes to court appointments is for sale. And she offers a scathing condemnation of the ongoing war in Chechnya, where kidnappings, extrajudicial killings, rape, and torture are begetting terrorism rather than fighting it.

Sounding an urgent alarm, Putin's Russia is both a gripping portrayal of a country in crisis and the testament of a great and intrepid reporter.

From Publishers Weekly
At a time when many Westerners are ambivalent about Russian President Vladimir Putin, famed war correspondent Politkovskaya (A Small Corner of Hell: Dispatches from Chechnya) argues that there is little to admire about the man or the country he has remade in his image. By recounting stories of the winners and losers in today's Russia, Politkovskaya portrays the country as a place where decency is punished, corruption rules and murder is simply a means of getting to and staying at the top. "Putin may be God and Czar in Chechnya, punishing and pardoning, but he is afraid of touching... Mafiosi," Politkovskaya writes. She's an attentive and compassionate storyteller, and the stories she tells are worth reading. The same cannot be said of her simplistic analysis. Politkovskaya's claims that Russia is more corrupt than ever before and that it's reverting to Stalinism, for example, may strike readers as provocative exaggerations. As someone frustrated with the Putin regime and furious about the war in Chechnya, which she argues is an omen of the state's future inhumane treatment of all its citizens, Politkovskaya is passionate and sometimes convincing. But she never adequately explains why, if life under Putin is so awful, 70% of Russian voters chose him for their president in 2004. (Jan.)

From Booklist
Politkovskaya, an award-winning journalist for the Moscow newspaper Novaya gazeta, makes no excuses for her dislike of Russian president Vladimir Putin and his leadership style, reminiscent of the late Soviet period. Over the past five years, Putin has strived to reverse the centrifugal forces that had acted upon political and state power in Russia during the Yeltsin years. And according to Politkovskaya, his most notorious ploy is the second Chechen war. But the war isn't the only factor in Russia's "failing democracy." Corruption at every level of government seems to be the order of the day. Politkovskaya provides anecdotal evidence of provincial oligarchs, corrupt judges, and dozens of horror stories from Muscovites and province dwellers. Politkovskaya has built an excellent case for her premise, but one wonders whether she is a Cassandra in her own country. Vernon Ford

Publisher's Weekly Reviewer is off the mark
By Kian
The Publisher's Weekly Reviewer is off the mark in his closing statement that 70 percent of the Russian population voted for Putin. S/he has no clue about the true political situation in Russia. During elections, competing political parties have no chance in gaining votes due to the Kremlin's firm grip on campaign activities. What the Kremlin wants is what the Russian people get. Does this reviewer really think the elctions are free and fair and that 70 percent is anything close to an accurate figure? There is no real democracy in Russia, and the majority of voters are so impoverished economically and uneducated (through no fault of their own) that when it comes to elections that you can't really expect them understand how to vote when they can't even buy medicine or food. Politkovskaya was murdered today. Sure her work was often over-emotional and perhaps it isn't brilliant in translation, but she was one of the few brave journalists to tackle the tough issues and to not self-edit. Her death follows that of Starvoitova, Gongadze (Ukraine), Khlebnikov and countless other post-Soviet journalists. Do some homework next time you write a book review.

Not Afraid to Speak the Truth
By Kristine
Choosing journalism as an occupation in modern day Russia can result in dangerous and often deadly consequences. Anna Politkovskaya was a Russian journalist who chose such a career in spite of these potential risks. Fearless and honest, she refused to compromise her integrity as a journalist by writing nothing but the truth.
Working for one of the last liberal Moscow newspapers, "Novaya Gazeta", Politkovskaya committed herself to writing the truth about the war in Chechnya (which she openly and vehemently opposed), and the blatantly corrupt Russsian government.
In her third book, "Putin's Russia...", Politkovskaya exposes the instability of today's Russia due to the above mentioned corruption that infiltrates everything from business to politics to the military and to the court systems. Bribes are simply accepted as a way of life by bureaucrats and ordinary citizens alike. Although corruption and other forms of political and governmental "ugliness" exist in all countries, none exist to the extent witnessed in today's Russia. And for all of this Politkovskaya blames one man, Vladimir Putin (though she also places some blame on the western countries that have "bought into" the mask of democracy Putin wears during public appearances). Politkovskaya however, seeing through the guise, accurately defines Putin as a throwback from the past, as a ruthless, Soviet-style dictator.
All of Politkovskaya's "accusations" are supported by incontrovertible facts and examples. If nothing else, she was thorough in her research. She had no hidden agenda or score to settle in writing this or any of her books - she merely wanted to truth to be told.
Sadly, for telling the truth Anna Politkovskaya paid the ultimate price. On a Saturday afternoon in October 2006 she was shot twice in the head in the elevator of her apartment building while returning from grocery shopping. The shooting was, without a doubt, a contract killing and was probably approved, if not ordered, by Putin himself.
Though disturbing and sometimes difficult to stomach (as the truth often is), this book is a must read for all Russophiles and/or those just interested in the truth about modern day Russia. In addition, I highly recommend her three other books as well - "A Dirty War: A Russian Reporter in Chechnya", "A Small Corner of Hell: Dispatches from Chechnya" (neither of which were ever allowed to be published in Russia), and "A Russian Diary: A Journalist's Final Account of Life, Corruption, and Death in Putin's Russia".

This is Journalism!
By Sergei
This review applies to Small Corner of Hell and Putin's Russia. I read almost all of Anna's books and reports for Novaya Gazeta. It always struck me how dedicated and fearless (sadly she paid the ultimate price) she was to helping regular civilians living in Chechnya, and not just Chechens but Russians too. Her critics acuse her of being pro-chechen, but she also did plenty of reporting about Russian families who got stuck in the basements of Grozny during Russian carpet bombing campaign and for whom nobody in Russia really cared. She also wrote about regular Russian soldiers who are basically used as modern day slaves (Russian army is not voluntary).

If you are a Western reader trying to understand the roots of this conflict, Politkovskaya's books are probably a wrong choice. For that you have to read some history books addressing Russian history of the last 200 - 300 years. Start with Richard Pipes or something similar. Her books are reports of what's going on there now. As such they are great examples of what the REAL journalism should be. They also serve as a good source on what's really going on in Russia today. They would make a good foundation for a War Crimes Tribunal for both Russian and Chechen sides (or are they really just the same Gang), which hopefully will take place some day.

Finally, as others pointed out here the Publisher Weekly reviewer frankly does not know what he is talking about. He probably thinks Kim Jon Il is a legitimate ruler because 98% of North Koreans "vote" for him, too.

Internal Medicine: A Doctor's Stories, by Terrence Holt

“Illuminates human fragility in tales both lyrical and soul-wrenching.” ―Danielle Ofri, New York Times Book Review

In this “artful, unfailingly human, and understandable” (Boston Globe) account inspired by his own experiences becoming a doctor, Terrence Holt puts readers on the front lines of the harrowing crucible of a medical residency. A medical classic in the making, hailed by critics as capturing “the feelings of a young doctor’s three-year hospital residency . . . better than anything else I have ever read” (Susan Okie, Washington Post), Holt brings a writer’s touch and a doctor’s eye to nine unforgettable stories where the intricacies of modern medicine confront the mysteries of the human spirit. Internal Medicine captures the “stark moments of success and failure, pride and shame, courage and cowardice, self-reflection and obtuse blindness that mark the years of clinical training” (Jerome Groopman, New York Review of Books), portraying not only a doctor’s struggle with sickness and suffering but also the fears and frailties each of us―doctor and patient―bring to the bedside.

Review
“[T]his book illuminates human fragility in tales both lyrical and soul-wrenching…. Holt dissects the medical experience in exquisite and restrained prose.” (Danielle Ofri - New York Times Book Review)

“Whether or not you classify this collection of nine stories as nonfiction, they ring true in both details and spirit, starting with a doctor’s evolution from the first night on call as an intern and ending with ethical questions that a physician ponders 40 months later, his residency complete… Dr. Holt never settles for easy answers, and the questions he poses―reflecting the frequent uncertainties of doctors and patients alike―will leave readers thinking long after the final page is turned.” (Alice Cary - BookPage)

“Holt, who also holds a master’s in fiction writing and a PhD in literature, is an excellent story teller… [T]he portrait Holt offers is artful, unfailingly human, and understandable.” (Dennis Rosen - Boston Globe)

“Holt’s new collection of stories, captures the feelings of a young doctor’s three-year hospital residency―the powerlessness, the exhaustion, the chaotic and seemingly endless shifts, and above all, the intensity of being with people in moments of extremity―better than anything else I have ever read… Holt’s unadorned prose and pitch-perfect dialogue contribute to the realism of these stories. At times they have the atmosphere of a hospital version of film noir, the narrator sounding as tough as Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe in his effort to be efficient and unflappable… Anyone who’s considering becoming a doctor, or anyone who wants to know what’s at the core of a doctor’s initiation, should read this book.” (Susan Okie - The Washington Post)

INSIGHTFUL LOOK INTO A RESIDENTS LIFE
By Patricia Kershman
As a retired medical transcriptionist, I found this book enjoyable and well written. What was really "scary" to me was the fact that these Residents work so many long back to back shifts caring for humans and making life threatening decisions regarding someones body. The AMA really needs to change and stop this practice of working residents and interns on back to back 24 hour shifts. Who does it help? A "good read" for anyone who has worked with doctors and nurses in hospitals.

"I have tried, more than anything else, to be faithful to the inner life of medicine."
By E. Bukowsky
Terrence Holt wrote "Internal Medicine" over a period of ten years after he completed his residency. Many doctors who produce books about how they honed their skills insist that everything they tell us is basically true, except that they changed names and identifying characteristics to protect their patients' privacy. Holt, on the other hand, claims that he can do justice to his subject only " by transforming it into a parable." The author creates scenarios that encapsulate what he learned during his training. The patients he describes are "assemblages drawn from a variety of sources, compiled from multiple cases."

This introduction almost persuaded me to put "Internal Medicine" down without going further. After all, I crave verisimilitude--not flights of fancy--in works of non-fiction. I persisted out of curiosity, and found Holt to be a gifted and sensitive writer who captures the terror, uncertainty, exhaustion, and exhilaration that medical trainees must feel while they stumble along, trying to acquire experience, knowledge, and self-confidence.

Holt evokes the vulnerability of a patient who is wheeled into the emergency room and left on a gurney for hours, has terrible symptoms and waits in trepidation for his prognosis, and senses that that a cure is unlikely--there may nothing more that anyone can do. In addition, Dr. Holt takes us on rounds; consults with other doctors and nurses; wracks his brain to come up with correct diagnoses and a sensible treatment plans; responds to codes; tackles the unenviable task of informing families that their loved ones have passed on; and uneasily navigates the twilight zone between life and death.

There are also bizarre passages about uncooperative individuals who are both mentally and physically ill, a tormented oncologist who blithely ignores the Hippocratic Oath, and a woman whose face is disfigured, but derives comfort from the sight and sound of birds. Certain sections are contrived and melodramatic, and may displease readers who prefer realism to fabrication. Still, "Internal Medicine" packs a wallop. It is a powerful, engrossing, and often dispiriting exploration of how physicians deal with (or fail to deal with) the demands of their challenging profession.

From School Library Journal
Gr 5 Up-Will Hobbs' exciting adventure tale with historical roots in the 1800s Alaskan Gold Rush (HarperCollins, 2001) is a sequel to Jason's Gold (Morrow, 2001). After much of Dawson City is destroyed by fire, Jason Hawthorn's brothers lose their sawmill to a swindler named Donner. Jason, now 16, and Jamie, his girlfriend, decide to enter a perilous race to Nome in a canoe for a $20,000 prize which they plan to use to recapture the mill. There are 300 entrants, and their major opponent turns out to be Donner who sabotages their canoe. The race is very suspenseful with river travel, destruction of their canoe, grizzly bears, kayaking in the open ocean, a secret shortcut overland, and a shortage of food. An appended note from the author at the end of the story details which parts of the story are historically accurate. Actor Boyd Gaines' steady, but interesting voice contributes to the excitement of the novel. He uses slight voice variations to help listeners keep the characters straight. This suspenseful tale will hold the attention of listeners until the very end.

From Booklist
Gr. 5-8. Fans of Hobbs' action-packed historical adventure novels will welcome this sequel to Jason's Gold (1999). When fire destroys much of the Canadian gold rush town where the Hawthorne brothers live, a shady character named Donner takes over their mill, and miners leave to find gold in Alaska, Jason decides to compete in a race to the new gold fields. With him in the contest are Jamie, the plucky young lady who appeared in Jason's Gold, and a mongrel dog, Burnt Paw. As if river travel, grizzly bears, a kayak journey across open sea, and a budding romance aren't enough, Jason and Jamie must also deal with ruthless Donner, their main competition in the race. The ending, though predictable, features an appropriate twist. Hobbs includes an epilogue about Jason and Jamie, notes on the historical basis for some of story's characters and events, and a map. Readers looking for an exciting adventure won't be disappointed. Catherine Andronik

A Nice Ride...
By Crazy James
Beginning in the city of Dawson in the Yukon, Jason and his dreamgirl, Jamie, paddle a canoe in a race to Nome against hundreds of others! The time is the gold rush at the turn of the 1900s in the Yukon territory. The setting is colorful, with nods to the gambling, drinking, and dancing that took place during the time. Names from the old west, such as Wyatt Earp and Calamity Jane appear in the tale that gives a good sketch of what was taking place at the time.
The story begins well with a confrontation between the brothers and the Sydney Mauler and carries along well, but it did not seem believable. When Jamie and Jason venture to race together, I wondered how a teenage boy and girl travelling together would have been perceived and was somewhat disappointed that this aspect was ignored. Though Down the Yukon is the sequel to Jason's Gold, it most defnitely stands on its own as a story, and for that Will Hobbs is to be commended... I look forward to reading more of his work.
