About the Author
Ramesh Gaonkar is professor of Electrical Engineering Technology at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, New York. He is also responsible for the development of the Computer Technology Program, STIP-Skills Improvement Program and Apprentice Program and is the author of several books. Prior to teaching, Mr. Gaonkar was a Design Engineer where he was responsible for Circuit Design. He has served as consultant for the National Science Foundation, Advanced Technology Program Proposal Review, Development and Evaluations Associates, and the National Institute of Industrial Engineering in Bombay, India. Mr. Gaonkar has received several awards, including the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Creative and Scholarly Activities, the Central NY Technology-Outstanding Teacher Award, and the American Society for Engineering Education Outstanding Teacher Award. He is a member of several professional organizations serving in leadership capacities. Mr. Gaonkar received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, his Master's of Science in Physics from Bombay University, his Master's of Science in Electrical Engineering from Union College and his Doctorate in Instructional Technology and Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University.

RIDDLED WITH ERRORS

So glad I only rented this book. My professor has found at least 2 coding errors per chapter. Apparently, the editors of this book were out to lunch for the entire thing. The code, verbatim from the book, does not work in MPLABS. That was super helpful when trying to learn it. Great job, guys.

learn Neumann architecture

Gaonkar gives you a very detailed education in programming embedded systems. You learn that a microcontroller is really just a special type of computer, where you deal directly with the von Neumann architecture. The specific choice of hardware is the PIC18. Of course, by the end of the book, you should be fluent in writing assembler for it. But, more generally, the skills can be readily transferred to most other types of microprocessors currently on the market. Plus many that do not yet exist. The Neumann design is unlikely to be supplanted. It has existed for over 60 years, being successfully instantiated in succeeding generations of hardware.

The book has many questions and assignments for each chapter. Along with a simulator for the PIC18 and exercises that involve programming for it. Realistically, many hours will be needed to tackle these problems. Which makes it well suited to accompany an undergraduate course.

Total rubbish

It's total rubbish not worth single penny! A dozen of pages with few questions that can be googled in seconds. The actual questions fill 60% of the kindle book leaving 40% of space for mambo-jumbo questions about attitude towards working over time etc. I did big mistake clicking the buy button... In short: stay away from this book unless you have too much money!

About the Author
Ulrich L. Rohde is the President of Communications Consulting Corporation, Executive Vice President of Ansoft Corporation, Chairman of Synergy Microwave Corporation, and a partner in Rohde & Schwarz, Munich. He is Honorary Visiting Professor of Electronic and Microwave Engineering at the University of Bradford, UK and is the author of six books. He resides in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey. Jerry Whitaker is the president of Technical Press, and the former editor of Broadcast Engineering. He is the author of more than a dozen technical books, including McGraw-Hill's Standard Handbook of Video and Television Engineering. He lives in Morgan Hill, California. Andrew Bateman is Director of Avren Ltd., a company specializing in digital signal processing and software radio consultancy. He was formerly Professor of Communications and Signal Processing at Bristol University. He lives in Bath, UK.

This Book Rocks!

To the guy who is disappointed in the DSP content: The book's synopsis clearly indicates that it contains SOME DSP material with this statement: "updates on all crucial DSP elements", but that does not mean it's a DSP reference volume. If you want DSP design instruction, try "Digital Signal Processing Technology" or something similar. If you want SDR material, also seek out the appropriately-focused material. This book is meant to be a general design guide and, as such, I think you have done it quite a disservice by unfairly rating it so low, based on only a single aspect of it's otherwise excellent coverage of communications receiver topologies. It's like you had a temper tantrum.

Anyway, the content in this book is exactly what I was looking for! This book will be the first step I will use in my own designs. It breaks down each building block of superhet receivers in a practical manner with only the required mathematics to support them.

Subtitle misleading

I needed a book on software radio and so I gladly bought this book when I came across it. I expected a lot of detailed information about DSP and software radio.
It's a thick book: 700 plus pages. However, DSP related contents only add up to 50 pages or so. Detailed treatment of software radio cannot be found anywhere. Even the itemized index has only one instance of 'software radio'. This book is mostly on (analog) circuit design issues for amps, mixers, oscillators, PLLs, etc.
I strongly doubt the authors' intention of using the subtitle 'DSP, Software Radios, and Design'. If you want to know more about software radio, you wouldn't get it from this book.

    "I haven't scared you away from me?"    I don't answer him. Instead I put my sketch pad down, get up from the chair, and go over to where he's lying on the couch. For a moment I stand there and then I sit down beside him, so our hips are touching.     "You haven't scared me away."    He nods slowly, meeting my gaze. I feel as if I've had a few drinks, though I haven't had anything at all. It occurs to me that I'm not even sure what I'm doing sitting here. Our eyes are still lingering on each other when he puts his hand up to my face.    "You're so beautiful," he murmurs, running his thumb over my chin and bottom lip. "I've always thought so."    I don't say anything--stunned by the compliment, plus his hand is having a peculiarly strong sexual effect on me and I can barely breathe.    "Come here." He pulls me towards him. And I know what he wants. Our mouths meet and I can feel his breath, taste his lips, inhale his scent. I've never been this close to Declan before and all I can think is that it's sublime. That's the word that comes to mind, rolling around in my head. Sublime. Everything about him feels right to me, feels like home, and I have this spiraling sensation that I'm falling down into a place I've never been before, but have always wanted to go....

Andrea Simonne grew up as an army brat and discovered she had a talent for creating personas at each new school. Fire in all the right places!

I loved this book! It was passionate and funny and I could barely put it down. I fell in love with Declan, one of the main characters. I didn't think I would at first, since he's not your typical hero, but the more I read the more I thought he was an irresistible character.

It opens with Kate running into her old boyfriend Ben, who broke her heart years ago. The book takes you from the present to the past in the first few chapters, showing Ben and Kate's relationship. It's really fun and you totally get why Kate never got over Ben. He comes back into her life at the same time that things are heating up with Declan, a reformed Irish bad boy. I also quite like Kate, as she is reliable and has a great sense of humor. There's a lot of witty dialogue with some super funny situations. It's definitely steamy too (those scenes are superb!). Fire Down Below is a very fitting title!

The book gives me that feeling of falling in love. The romance is so real. I could go on, but I don't want to give everything away. I will say one more thing though, that some of the love scenes really moved me - especially in the second half of the book. They were so emotional and intimate. I wish this author had a backlist! Apparently she is coming out with another book soon. If it's anywhere near as good as this one she's going to be a new auto-buy for me!

Another wonderful story by Ms. Simonne

I read Year of Living Blonde three days ago and throughly enjoyed it. So I purchased Ms. Simonne's other two books, just finishing Fire Down Below this morning. The story was delightful and I truly appreciated that it was a stand alone with no cliffhanger. Don't want to give away any spoilers, but glad Kate got her HEA. Would have loved an epilogue to see what happens 2, 3 or 4 years later.

This book is a solid 4.5 stars. I loved the story and it written very well. Declan is the absolute best. You will truly love him. The chemistry between he and Kate is beautifully portrayed., you will not be disappointed in this one!

Eric manages to make goal setting achievable for anyone willing to follow his simple 9 step action plan approach. He manages to explain and give examples that anyone can understand making it all happen using brevity and frankness. I gave "Bullet" a 5 star rating because the writing is simple to understand and The direct approach is very effective.
