Course Guidebook for The Fall and Rise of China China-the world's oldest continuous civilization-has undergone an astonishing transformation in a brief span of recent history. Since the collapse of its once-glorious empire in 1911, China has seen decades of epic turmoil and upheavals, emerging in the new century as both an authoritarian megastate and an economic powerhouse, poised to become an imposing global force. By current estimates, the People's Republic is set to outpace the United States economically in the coming decades and to rival or surpass it militarily, making China the richest, most powerful nation on earth. How did this happen? How can we account for China's momentous-and almost wholly unanticipated-global rise? And what does it mean, for us in the West and for humanity's future?

CHAPTER 1

Steven Who?

Even if You Weren't Popular in High School, Didn't Make Straight A's, and Didn't Make the Football Team, You Can Still Achieve Phenomenal Success

Two Stevens sat next to each other at high school football games; one was in the band, the other in the color guard. Both were mediocre students, rarely dated, and were totally unknown. They excelled in nothing significant. One was Steven Spielberg, and the other was Steven who?

Insight 1: Past achievement is not a true predictor of future success

Most high schools save a part of their yearbook for the "most likely" selections. You know -- the student most likely to succeed, the student most likely to be president, and so forth. I remember voting that Chuck James would be the most likely to succeed. He was senior class president, an "A" student, a good athlete, and very popular. I remember when the ballots were passed out to the senior class. There were many categories, and many students were nominated for each category. Obviously, my name was not on the ballot. If it had been, I definitely wouldn't have won in any category. Most of the class of 1966 would have had puzzled looks on their faces and would have had one question when they came to my name: "Steven who ?"

I didn't have the looks or athletic prowess to be popular with the "in" crowd, and my "B" average wasn't high enough to put me in the intellectual crowd. Consequently, most of my friendships were with kids off campus. As a freshman I joined the Civil Air Patrol because two of my buddies had joined. Even though I didn't realize it at the time, joining CAP was going to play a very important role in my future.

Another Steven at our school was very similar to me. Like me, he didn't have the looks or athletic abilities to be part of the "in" crowd. He was a mediocre student, and his favorite activities were likewise "off campus." He was a good clarinetist, however, and was in the school's marching band. But at school football games, nothing was better than being on the football team. They had it made. And nothing was worse (in terms of status) than being in the band -- nothing except being in the color guard. Teenagers in the 60s weren't impressed with high school students who wore military uniforms. But we got free tickets to the games and sat next to the band. I sat next to the clarinets and often conversed with the clarinetist who sat on my right. His name was the same as mine (Steve), but that was all I knew about him.

Twenty years later I received a call from my mom asking if I had ever met Steven Spielberg when I was at Arcadia. I told her he couldn't have been a student at Arcadia because even though most kids didn't know me, I knew just about everyone and never met him. She told me to grab my yearbook and look up his name. I not only found his name, I found his picture and was amazed to discover he was the "Steve" I sat next to at so many football games!

How could this be? How could Steven Spielberg have gone to my high school and yet have been totally unknown to me and most of the other students on campus? Surely his genius, his creativity, his incredible drive would have been evident to all, even in high school. Not even close. And yet all the qualities that have made him so successful were just as much alive in his mind and heart then. So why was he never successful in anything significant in high school? The answer lies in what we deem "significant."

In school the three most important areas of achievement are athletics, grades, and popularity -- at least those are the three most significant areas to students and teachers. So when a person doesn't excel in any one of those areas, he doesn't excel in anything "significant." By academia's definition, neither Steven nor I excelled in anything that mattered, and I'm sure none of our peers or faculty ever expected us to achieve anything noteworthy with our lives.

This is the kind of narrow outlook that traps probably 90 percent of the American population; that is, most of us never achieve stardom in school, so when we pass into adulthood, we never expect to achieve anything worthwhile in life. We have accepted everyone else's definition of "significance" and consequently set our sights so low that we never even try to achieve the success most of us would like to attain.

I am told that when baby elephants are born, their trainers tie a rope to a pole planted securely in the ground and then tie the other end to the baby elephant. The elephant quickly learns that when that rope is on his neck, he can't go anywhere. By the time he becomes an adult, he can be tied to a small pole that he could easily rip right out of the ground, but he doesn't even try because he has been conditioned to believe that when that rope is around his neck, he can't go anywhere.

The same thing happens with most adult Americans. Having achieved nothing they consider important in their youth, they have come to believe that they are simply average and therefore expect to achieve nothing significant in their lives. By the end of this book I hope that everybody reading it will see that the superachievers are no different from the rest of us. They have just learned that the rope that kept them tied to the stake was really only a thread, and the stake itself only a yardstick. By the end of this book, you will have no reason to accept mediocrity. At this point you can't even begin to imagine what average people can do when they break loose of the bonds that have kept them bound to the "status quo."

So the first law of success involves your past and how to break loose from what you see as your lack of success.

Law of Past Failures: Don't use your past failures or lack of achievement as an excuse or limitation for your lack of achievement in the present or future. The former does not control the latter.

Insight 2: If you can do one thing well -- even if it doesn't seem significant -- you have the potential for phenomenal success.

Even though Steven Spielberg and I achieved nothing significant in high school, we did achieve some things that seemed insignificant to us and to everyone else around us (except our parents).

Steven was an excellent clarinetist and even gained a headline in our yearbook praising him for his acting talent in a school play (although his name was misspelled in the headline). But even more important than his musical or acting talent was his talent in something else: making entertaining home movies with the Super 8 film camera his mother gave him in elementary school. Do you think the faculty or students at Arcadia High even knew about this activity, much less recognized or valued it? I'm sure the faculty never recognized it even though he often cut school specifically to go out and film things. How insignificant was this high school activity of Steven's?

Today, four of the top ten grossing films of all time were directed by Steven Spielberg.

My success was even more mundane than Steven's. My dad had always regretted not learning to type in high school. In his adult years, the fruit of his creative mind was stifled or thwarted over and over again by his inability to type. When I was choosing my electives for my freshman year in high school, he told me I would have to take a year of typing. I argued as hard and as long as I could, but to no avail. In my mind, typing was for girls and I was a teenage boy, and those two thoughts just didn't coincide.

I finally struck a deal with him that both of us could live with. If I could end the semester as the fastest typist in the class, I wouldn't have to take a second semester of typing. By the end of the first semester, I was the fastest typist out of about sixty students. Little did I know that typing would become the cornerstone of most of my other achievements in life. Thanks, Dad.

As I mentioned earlier, I joined the Civil Air Patrol my freshman year to be with two of my buddies. The three of us were the only ones out of sixteen hundred students in our high school who were part of this off-campus organization. Certainly this was another "insignificant" part of my teenage years. Right? Wrong! Because I could type, I was quickly promoted over my friends. This was the first success I had tasted since little league baseball, and it tasted wonderful. I began to work harder to fulfill requirements for promotions, and with each promotion the taste grew sweeter and the desire to succeed more consuming.

By the time I was graduated from high school, I was the highest ranking CAP cadet in the state and had won numerous national awards, including flying lessons that enabled me to receive my private pilot's license when I was sixteen.

My achievements in CAP meant nothing to the faculty and students of my high school, but they meant plenty to my future. My achievement in this one area taught me that I could be successful even if the success came in an apparently insignificant endeavor. As a skinny, acne-faced teenager, I gained my first bit of self-respect.

A Special Note to Parents Who Want to See Their Children Learn to Achieve Success

You can help your children break the bonds of mediocrity that school and their peers use to bind them. Children don't have to be a success at everything -- or, for that matter, anything significant -- as long as they are successful at something.

The key is for you to listen and watch for those things that seem interesting to them. My seven-year-old loves to "build" with Legos, so every time he creates a new structure, I praise him -- not just with generalities ("That's a great building") but with meaningful specifics ("I like how you put windows on each side, and I love the roof").

For my nineteen-year-old it's his ability on the drums and guitar. He's totally self-taught. His music is the kind I would never listen to for more than a few minutes, but boy, is he good! And I am so proud of him. He is also the best friend any of his friends c...

nice autobiography.... but little useful info
By chuckmatthews
this guy writes a nice autobiography about how he did it in marketing... maybe interesting for some but not for me. I guess I was expecting something more than a horn blowing fanfare of an "I did it my way" brag-o-rama.

Fabulous book!
By Melissa Anderson
I've read this book about 5 times, starting from when I was 23 years old and floudering around in the business world trying to figure out what I could do for a living.... making about about 1/5 of what I do today, 8 years later.

Steven Scott meshes practical skills and advice with actual step by step activities to do to immediately put what he's saying into action in your own life. He's the genius behind such products as Richard Simmon's "Deal a Meal", Suzanne Sommer's "Thigh Master", and Christie Brinkley & Chuck Norris' "Total Gym".

Extremely easy reading by a man who has done it. It's like having a personal coach who is a multi-millionare at your side telling you how to do it. I recommend it to anyone of any age.

Brilliant marketing & copywriting book -- powerful tactics!
By Kenneth Calhoun
This is one of my top 3 favorite marketing/copywriting books of the year (also get Eugene Schwartz' Breakthrough Advertising, and Joe Sugarman's books).

As an internet marketer and producer of internet infomercials, I found the insights shared by Steven to be priceless. The checklist on page 194 has helped me make thousands in sales improvements on a single campaign, and the inclusion of actual scripts and objection-handling phrases and marketing perspective was absolutely stunning.

Scott's a brilliant man, and this is one book that I will refer to for years (especially all the later chapters where his best secrets are revealed -- crucial stuff for marketers and copywriters). Buy this book -- one of my all time favorites, and I've bought hundreds.

Interesting historical value
By Kay Robbins
This book was very interesting to read how tomatoes were grown in the past. I had thought gardens were grown mostly using organic methods until the advent of big agriculture. Apparently I was wrong. This was written in 1907 and advocates using chemicals that most of us have never even heard of. That was not much practical information that I would even consider using but the historical aspect makes it worth reading.

A Philosophy of Boredom, by Lars Svendsen

It has been described as a "tame longing without any particular object" by Schopenhauer, "a bestial and indefinable affliction" by Dostoevsky, and "time's invasion of your world system" by Joseph Brodsky, but still very few of us today can explain precisely what boredom is. A Philosophy of Boredom investigates one of the central preoccupations of our age as it probes the nature of boredom, how it originated, how and why it afflicts us, and why we cannot seem to overcome it by any act of will.

Lars Svendsen brings together observations from philosophy, literature, psychology, theology, and popular culture, examining boredom's pre-Romantic manifestations in medieval torpor, philosophical musings on boredom from Pascal to Nietzsche, and modern explorations into alienation and transgression by twentieth-century artists from Beckett to Warhol. A witty and entertaining account of our dullest moments and most maddening days, A Philosophy of Boredom will appeal to anyone curious to know what lies beneath the overwhelming inertia of inactivity.

Review
"An amusing, learned, and articulate philosophical study of one of humanity's prime afflictions. . . Svendsen has a way with words, and, unlike many writers of philosophy books, is also blessed with a sly wit and a thorough knowledge of popular culture. You would be hard pressed to find a better book to make do with this year than this wonderful little one, which is, somehow, despite the desolation at its core, oddly uplifting." (Phil Miller The Glasgow Herald 2005-02-01)

"A good, solid practical work of philosophy, in the tradition of Aristotle's Ethics . . . he has a light touch and a playful attitude." (Tom Hodgkinson The New Statesman 2005-03-14)

"When an investigation into boredom is done well, as it is in A Philosophy of Boredom, it is positively gripping." (Times Literary Supplement 2005-01-01)

"A fascinatingly modern essay on ennui and emptiness . . . Svendsen's thesis is so cool that boredom, linked with desire rather than need, suddenly seems like a desirable state of being in an agitated age."

(The Times 2005-04-30)

"Quite fascinating"-The Times Online

(Ben Macintyre The Times Online 2005-04-02)

"Lars Svendsen, author of A Philosophy of Boredom, is anything but boring on the subject."

(Harry Mount The Daily Telegraph 2005-03-10)

"For a serious work of philosophy, Boredom exhibits a light touch and impressive pop-cultural range. . . . It's not boring."

(Village Voice 2005-06-08)

"Far from boring, this is a highly accessible and entertaining study." (The Age 2004-04-06)

"An engaging read . . . touches upon many points which indeed are central to anthropological concerns. . . . I highly recommend this book." (Yasmine Musharbash Australian Journal of Anthropology 2006-01-01)

"Witty. . . . Unlike Scandinavian philosophers known for sterile prose styles, Svendsen combines droll dismissal of statistical research, incisive readings of boredom art . . . and etymological ponderings of the nuances among boredom. . . . You will not be bored reading him for the first time." (Carlin Romano Philadelphia Inquirer 2006-08-06)

This Book Is As Satisfying As A Yawn, Though Much More Energizing
By Jarod Kintz
When one is superficially bored, one can easily distract oneself by making paper airplanes, such as the one that graces the cover of this book. But only when one is profoundly bored can a work of art such as this book be born.

For nearly four hours my eyes were glued to the pages of Svendsen's amazing book, and then finally, after many tears and shrilly screams, I managed to pull them off the paper without ripping the sensitive skin on my eyelids and actually read the book. And what a book it turned out to be!

It's everything you ever wanted to know about boredom and more, even though there are no directions on how to make paper airplanes or origami mustaches, although images of Nietzsche's glorious mustache kept coming to mind and making my upper lip itch as he was discussed in various parts of this book.

You'll be astounded at how Svendsen explores the once dark and mysterious subject of boredom like a spelunker in a cave, and ultimately emerges in the end holding a few stalactites of truth that were formed by the seemingly endless and measured drips of water that make us aware that time is passing, and also how small and insignificant we are in comparison to this cave called life.

This book will change your outlook on boredom, life, and Kierkegaard's inability to grow a mustache (Ok, so maybe not), and it will enlighten you in a way that is both entertaining and entertaining. Did I mention that this book is entertaining? Well it is, so if you are in the mood to think and be dazzled by a modern day philosophical giant, then I suggest you pick up a copy of this book.

Boring material; proceed with caution
By Auke
First of all, let me admit that I've never read a purely philosophical work before and, aside from some random thoughts on Nietzsche and Plato, I probably know less about philosophy than you do.

That said, I cannot say this is a groundbreaking work which will change the way you look at the world, *however*, I have personally certainly gotten some insights in the way one /can/ (Svendsen tries to be careful not to judge; more on that later) think about the way people handle "existential" boredom. Svendsen starts by trying to give some possible definitions for the boredom he'd like to discuss, which is very interesting already. Part two, Stories of Boredom, I didn't find particularly interesting, although I guess it could all make sense if you've actually read the work Svendsen refers to.

Don't misunderstand the three stars I'm giving this book. It is a book about boredom, and that doesn't make the book very attractive. However, I have very much enjoyed the thoughts in this book while waiting for the bus to arrive and while waiting for my turn at the dentist - ie., when I was bored. If you're studying philosophy already and have read the works Svendsen uses a long time ago, this book may be less interesting than if you're looking for a quick intro to this subject.

Do note that this is not a self-help book. Svendsen gives some thoughts on what existential boredom is, and where it could have originated, but does not in a direct sense give solutions. To quote the preface, "[...] I intend to present less of a cohesive argument, more a series of sketches that will hopefully bring us closer to an understanding of boredom." Although Svendsen promises not to draw any personal conclusions, be warned that the phrases "I believe" and "I do not believe" do appear in various places, and the author has an obvious affection for Nietzsche's view on the matter. Further, Svendsen implicitly suggests distinct social levels in the world, which I would not expect as part of an objective stance.

Go read this book
By janie chodosh, Author
Since I write for a young adult audience, I read a lot of YA fiction. I recently read Laurie Halse Anderson's The Impossible Knife of Memory. Laurie Halse Anderson is one of my favorite young adult writers. In fact, one of the first YA books I read was her novel, Catalyst. The Impossible Knife of Memory lived up to my high standards. What I loved most about this book was the snappy dialogue between Hayley, the protagonist, and her eventual love interest, Finn. Their banter, which ranges from snarky/sarcastic to hilarious to poignant, hums with real-life teenage vitality. Teens do so love to take linguistic jabs at each other, and the dialogue perfectly captures that artful use of language. There is a deeper side to this story, too, the relationship between a veteran father suffering from PTSD and his teenage daughter. Haley's first person narration is interwoven with her father's flashbacks of his devastating war experience, allowing the reader a glimpse into the root of his suffering. The book is nuanced with themes of memory and trust and how to move on when you've hit rock bottom.

Impossible To Put Down
By Tamela Mccann
Laurie Halse Anderson's The Impossible Knife of Memory has all the hallmarks of a young adult novel: boy/girl relationship, troubled parent, good friend with her own issues. If you left it at that, it would be the same old story that fills so many YA novels. Thankfully, Anderson's writing and her sense of character make this book a cut above the rest.

Hayley's job is to make sure her father stays sane and doesn't hurt himself. Or at least, that's the job she's been saddled with and she doesn't know any other way of life. Her father is a veteran suffering from PTSD; as a result, when he isn't drinking or doing drugs, he's running away to try to dull the pain. This year, her eighteenth, he's taken her home to her grandmother's house and enrolled her in school (something she hasn't been attending since riding shotgun with him while he was a truck driver). Suddenly Hayley has the school officials looking at her, expecting her to do and be things she's not used to, and her father's condition is a minefield of issues. At least Hayley has a friend in Gracie and a boyfriend named Finn; there are people out there who care what happens to her. But holding it all together may end up being too much for all of them.

Hayley's situation had me so angry I couldn't see straight; sadly enough, there are plenty of kids out there who must be the parent to their own parent, and her problems just keep multiplying. I watched as events spiraled out of control and became completely absorbed in Hayley's desperation as she tried to make everything work out while keeping her walls up. Anderson makes the story work without becoming too overwhelming or too neat; it would be interesting to see what happens as Hayley's life progresses. This glimpse into what a child of a PTSD vet may endure is illuminating and riveting, and Anderson remains one of the best young adult writers around.

Another excellent book by this author.
By Mary
I have read several of her other books, and she always makes the characters feel very real, like someone I might actually know. My only "disappointment" is no book sequels, many of the characters, I would love to see their stories continued. But I guess that brings the fun of "writing your own future" for them.

Its Funny
By A Customer
I read this book in my second grade class. This is a funny book. Even Steven likes everything even. Odd Todd likes everything odd. For example, Even Steven would like 8 pancakes and Odd Todd would like 7 pancakes. Even Steven goes through hard work with Odd Todd. Then, Even Steven notices that odd and even are both good. My favorite part was when Odd Todd and Even Steven win their $50 prize.

Concept-Rich and Too Cute.
By Liam's Mom
My 4 1/2 year old and I love this book! We're starting pre-K this fall, and I've been looking for math-content books to enrich our daily reading practice. Like another reviewer said, the book isn't overtly focused on math concepts, but I think the idea that everything about Even Steven and Odd Todd is even and odd (respectively, of course) is really clever. My son loves the quirkiness of each character, and I'm thrilled that he's getting some knowledge base of the concepts he'll eventually learn in school.

Incidentally, I purchased this book because it was listed as a resource at the back of "Missing Mittens" by Stuart J. Murphy. If you're looking for books based on mathematical concepts, Murphy's MathStart books are really nicely done. http://www.mathstart.net/

Very clever
By Cheryl S
My 2 1/2 year old loves this book. I have read it many times. I first heard about it when a mom at a park was reciting it from memory to her 2 year old. It is a very fun book and a great way to introduce the concept of odd and even numbers. Also, the pictures are very fun and my son loves counting all of the fish, cats, gerbils, etc on the pages.
