Hot and Steamy and filled with Integrity for the BDSM community

General: Hot, steamy and so sexual you'll forget you're reading an actual in some points! This book was very well written. From plot, to setting to all the little details it was a fantastic read and a hot one as well. Albeit, it was a little weak on actual story it was a perfect slice of life in my opinion into the world that Voodoo belonged too. The main element of the novel felt a little forced, a stalker. It felt a little contrite and more of a way to force the interaction of Voodoo and Iris along. By that I mean I never really felt the tension in anything regarding the stalker and would like to have seen a little bit more intensity from that plot.

Voodoo touches on a touchy subject for not only readers, but writing as well. BDSM is constantly written about, sometimes positively and sometimes made to be a joke, a reflection on bad writing normally. Voodoo was written with integrity and I feel some novels of this nature are not. I felt that it was the biggest accomplishment in the book. However the characters were scorching and entertaining. A definite must read.

Characters: Voodoo- Voodoo is the Master in this book. I rarely start with the male as books are typically told from the females perspective more often. However, I feel Voodoo is the obvious lead in this book. He is sexy from head to toe and a true master in BDSM. He put himself second, a trait many think is the opposite of a good Master. His purpose is to help and guide his submissive and his dealings with his inner issues of commitment flew in the face of this and made him a truly complex and entertaining male.

Iris- Iris is a strong and independent character, despite being submissive. I never felt like she wasn't actually completely in control. She struggled at first to accept the idea of Voodoo and it was realistic. Her entire journey from curiosity, to dabbling to lifestyle was so easy to connect with and a great heroine experience.

I was so excited to see that one of my favorite authors, Justus Roux, had a new book. Voodoo (Master of My Heart #1) was released on my birthday so it seemed like Ms. Roux had given me a present. And what a terrific present it was.

Voodoo is the story of one woman's journey into submission and one man's struggle to find his perfect mate. Amanda had long been fascinated by Domination/submission but was hesitant to accept that part of herself. It wasn't until her friend got her entrance into a BDSM club for her birthday that she finally decided to go for it. Taking the code name of Iris, she picks Voodoo as her potential master. With Voodoo's help, she learns to embrace her submissive nature and in turn, she teaches Voodoo about love.

I have been a fan of Ms. Roux's books for a long time. I have read her entire Masters series, as well as, some of her other books. I can honestly say that her writing and storytelling have never been better. Ms. Roux painted a very realistic picture of a woman struggling to accept her submissive desires in a world that might not understand or accept. I loved the environment Ms. Roux created at the club and in Voodoo and Iris' relationship. She stressed the importance of communication in a BDSM relationship and showcased this by having the hero and heroine sit and discuss wants, needs and expectations prior to any session.

I absolutely loved the character of Voodoo and want to adopt him as my new book boyfriend. He is everything you would want and need in a master. He is warm, caring, patient and gorgeous. Even as he struggled with his own demons about love and permanent relationships, he never forgot about Iris and her needs and desires. He always made sure to put her first and was loving and patient as she worked through her own feelings about submission.

Iris is a character I can relate to. She was submissive to her Master without losing herself or her independent nature. She learned to accept her needs and in fact becomes a more confident woman as she embraced her natural desires. Iris still had moments of doubt and insecurity, but she wasn't afraid to discuss this with her Master or other submissives. Once she made the decision to accept Voodoo as her Master, Iris committed herself completely. But you never got the feeling that she demeaned herself or became just a reflection of her Master.

The BDSM community described in Voodoo was supportive of Iris and Voodoo. I felt just as connected to the secondary characters as I did to the hero and heroine. The secondary characters showed the variety of individuals involved in this lifestyle and the different types of relationships they have. No one judged anyone for their choices and instead embraced each other as practically family.

If I had to find one problem with Voodoo, it would be that the ending felt a little rushed. There was an additional storyline of a stalker who was obsessed with Iris. The stalker poised a threat to Iris and Voodoo individually, as well as, their relationship. I enjoyed this part of the storyline as it forced Iris and Voodoo to face their feelings for each other and pushed their relationship forward. Yet the resolution of the situation was quick and I could guess how the whole thing would end. But this is a minor complaint and in no way detracts from this fantastic book.

Voodoo is the first in Ms. Roux's Master of My Desire series. If Voodoo is any indication of the quality of this series, then I anxiously await the next installment. And while you are waiting, I recommend you go back and read some of Ms. Roux's other books. At least you'll be happy and occupied while you wait.

I needed a red pen...

I can't believe this has good reviews. The first thing I thought when I started reading was, does this author speak English? Because it's written like it was translated from something else...badly. The author does not know how to properly use a comma, let alone a semicolon, so many sentences feel like run-ons. She also never uses conjunctions (won't, you'll, etc) so the characters sound stilted and, again, foreign. And then on top of that, multiple places have verb tenses that don't agree (past and present in the same sentence).

I slogged through the whole book because I was slightly curious about the story, and the sex scenes were...okay. But seriously, this author needs an editor, or a copy of Strunk & White at the very least. Or she needs to learn the rule that you should read your writing out loud, and if it sounds weird, fix it--she'd run out of breath immediately for lack of commas! If I could find an address, I'd take a red pen to this book and mail it back to her so she could see. It COULD have been a good book--the BDSM is accurately portrayed as far as I can tell (I just read about it, am not in the lifestyle myself), the characters are intriguing, and there is what could have been a great twist.

My mom got this and a few others in the series as freebies from a contest, and I'm very glad we didn't spend money on them. Please don't waste yours!

About the Author
Stefan Roesch has worked in the tourism industry for over fifteen years and is currently Deputy Managing Director for CenTouris, a market research and tourism consulting institute based at the University of Passau, Germany. He is also a freelance consultant in film tourism, an area he has been researching for ten years. As part of his doctoral thesis Stefan undertook fieldwork research on several case studies, including The Lord of the Rings in New Zealand, Star Wars in Tunisia and The Sound of Music in Austria. He regularly speaks at international conferences and advises the industry on how to utilise film for marketing strategies. In 2013, Stefan founded the film production company Punakaiki Productions.

Fun, Awesome Book!

I just bought this book for my son, and he loves it! The book includes a cool little hacky sack, which was perfect for him because he's a first-time hacky-sacker. He learned all sorts of tricks and techniques, which he is always thrilled to showcase for his friends (who are very impressed!). Several of his friends are experienced hacky-sackers, and they, too, learned tons of new tricks from this great little book!

The illustrations are great, too! Overall, this is an awesome little book. I definitely recommend it to all!

About the Author
Rise B. Axelrod is McSweeney Professor of Rhetoric and Teaching Excellence, Emeritus, at the University of California, Riverside, where she was also director of English Composition. She has previously been professor of English at California State University, San Bernardino; director of the College Expository Program at the University of Colorado, Boulder; and assistant director of the Third College (now Thurgood Marshall College) Composition Program at the University of California, San Diego. She is the co-author, with Charles R. Cooper, of the best-selling textbook The St. Martin's Guide to Writing as well as The Concise Guide to Writing and Reading Critically, Writing Well.  Charles R. Cooper is an emeritus professor at the University of California, San Diego. He served as coordinator of the Third College (now Thurgood Marshall College) Composition Program at the University of California, San Diego, and co-director of the San Diego Writing Project, one of the National Writing Project Centers. He advised the National Assessment of Educational Progress—Writing (1973-1981) and coordinated the development of California's first statewide writing assessment (1986-1991). He taught at the University of California, Riverside; the State University of New York at Buffalo; and the University of California, San Diego. I had to purchase it for a class that I am taking. Turns out the book is pretty good. For someone that is not that confident about their writing skills and stresses out when I have to write a paper, this book has given me some good tips on how to approach my writing.

E-textbook version does NOT have the Integrated Media

If your course requires you to use the integrated media--DO NOT PURCHASE the Kindle E-textbook version. It does not come with the book. Either purchase the hard copy or find alternate e-versions of the book that actually come with integrated media. I purchased this and am very annoyed at this point. The media is a necessary part for my wife's class so we will have to find a workaround until an actual solution is found.

About the Author
LaRoux Gillespie is the world-renonwned leader of the deburring "industry." He knows more about the formation and removal of burrs than anyone else.He has identified at least 100 deburring processes, 57 of which are commonly used. LaRoux earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Kansas University and his Master of Science in Manufacturing Engineering from Utah State University. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in Missouri and California, and a Certified Manufacturing Engineer.
