Virginia Woolf as Feminist, by Naomi Black

Before the Second World War and long before the second wave of feminism, Virginia Woolf argued that women's experience, particularly in the women's movement, could be the basis for transformative social change. Grounding Virginia Woolf's feminist beliefs in the everyday world, Naomi Black reclaims Three Guineas as a major feminist document. Rather than a book only about war, Black considers it to be the best, clearest presentation of Woolf's feminism.Woolf's changing representation of feminism in publications from 1920 to 1940 parallels her involvement with the contemporary women's movement (suffragism and its descendants, and the pacifist, working-class Women's Co-operative Guild). Black guides us through Woolf's feminist connections and writings, including her public letters from the 1920s as well as "A Society," A Room of One's Own, and the introductory letter to Life As We Have Known It. She assesses the lengthy development of Three Guineas from a 1931 lecture and the way in which the form and illustrations of the book serve as a feminist subversion of male scholarship. Virginia Woolf as Feminist concludes with a discussion of the continuing relevance of Woolf's feminism for third-millennium politics.

Review
"In this convincing new study, Black (political science and women's studies, York Univ., Toronto) demonstrates that Woolf's book-length essay 'Three Guineas' is the clearest, most explicit statement of her feminism―a philosophy Woolf referred to as the 'life of natural happiness.' Black provides a meticulously researched examination of 'Three Guineas,' contending that it is central to Woolf's large body of work. In addition, she carefully considers different versions of the text, along with Woolf's other works; her contacts with the various women's organizations promoting the suffrage movement; and her beliefs about how the world can be transformed into a peaceful society. . . .Highly recommended for academic libraries."―Library Journal, April 1, 2004

"Perhaps none of Virginia Woolf's works has been so little loved and ill-understood as Three Guineas. . . . But now, thanks to Virginia Woolf as Feminist, Naomi Black's learned, tireless argument in favor of this deliberately obdurate work, readers may come to appreciate this most uncompromising of Woolf's feminist pronouncements. Black's major and sustained claim is that Three Guineas is an intrinsically feminist work whose anti-war attitudes cannot be disassociated from Woolf's assault on masculinist privilege and domination. . . . These details, coupled with accurate paraphrase and citation of Woolf's arguments, give Black's study its quiet and insistent authority. Virginia Woolf as Feminist . . . has some new-fashioned, and urgent, literary and historical work to perform, as Black makes clear in the fervid argument she makes for Three Guineas continuing relevance for feminism in the third millennium. She admits Woolf's relative neglect of sexuality and class in her feminist writings, issues that trouble our own time, but in return asks us to consider how much Woolf has to say about women's health issues and the racial politics that also preoccupy us. In closing, she refers to the recent wars in Afghanistan and Chechnya to impress upon us how the feminist objectives underwritten by Woolf's three guineas―'democratization, education, and public professional activity'―still represent a program for political transformation."―Maria DiBattista, Princeton University, English Literature in Transition, 1880–1920, 49:1, 2006

"This book feels remarkably short at 200 pages, and at the end of it I feel―and this is not a criticism―that there is much more to be said about Woolf's feminism: 'We will never, in any simple sense, fully understand either Three Guineas or the feminism it represents'. This is one of those few books that I wish I had been (cap)able to write. The reason I have quoted from it so extensively is that Naomi Black expresses so clearly the arguments she is making."―Stuart N. Clark, Virginia Woolf Bulletin, no. 20, September 2005

"Black . . . provides an excellent account of the textual evolution and development of Woolf's feminism. . . . Black effectively combats the image of Woolf as an aloof artist by enriching our understanding of the feminist contexts in which she worked."―College Literature, 32:2, Summer 2005

"Naomi Black provides a richly detailed account of how Woolf's most controversial feminist book, Three Guineas, was conceived, constructed, and received. Black's powers of historical recovery illuminate the central place of that work in Woolf's career and its continuing challenge to new generations of readers."―Alex Zwerdling, University of California, Berkeley

"Naomi Black has produced a wonderfully astute and compassionate exploration of Virginia Woolf's feminism. Analyses of Woolf's oeuvre have been too long monopolized by literary scholars focused on her novels or by biographers poking into her psychology and sexuality. Black's engaging and beautifully contextualized rereading of Woolf's key essay, Three Guineas, and the works that precede and surround it, is as welcome as it is overdue. The author, a leading feminist political theorist based in Canada and editor of a critical edition of Three Guineas, persuasively and powerfully reclaims Woolf's nonfiction contributions for the history of feminism and the history of political thought."―Karen Offen, Institute for Research on Women and Gender, Stanford University

"Virginia Woolf's process of creating Three Guineas was notoriously long, complex, and scholarly. Naomi Black's book is deeply impressive in its command of that process and the role it played in Woolf's career. Virginia Woolf as Feminist is a book that Woolf scholars will value as a reference work on Three Guineas."―Jessica Berman, University of Maryland, Baltimore County

"As Woolf said,'the triumph of learning is that it leaves something done solidly forever.' We have here an account of all Woolf ever had to say, apart from her fiction, about feminism. And the significance of Three Guineas is established, in its entirety, now and ever more. An invaluable achievement."―Carolyn Heilbrun, author of Writing a Woman's Life

Abstract Art Against Autonomy: Infection, Resistance, and Cure since the 60s, by Mark A. Cheetham

In Abstract Art Against Autonomy, Mark Cheetham provides a revolutionary account of abstraction in the visual arts since the decline of the formalist paradigms in the 1960s. He claims that abstract work remains a vital contributor to contemporary visual culture, but that it performs in a way that is different from its predecessors of the early and mid-twentieth century and cannot adequately be assessed without new models of understanding. Cheetham posits that abstraction has reacted to paradigms of purity with practices of impurity. By examining abstract art since the 1960s within a narrative of infection, resistance, and cure, Cheetham provides an opportunity to rethink paradigmatic genres - the monochrome and the mirror - and to link in new ways the work of artists whose work extends and complicates the tradition of abstract art, including Yves Klein, Robert Rauschenberg, James Turrell, Gerhard Richter, Peter Halley. General Idea, and Taras Polataiko.

By KeriMans
As a professor of neuroanatomy/neurophysiology, I would say that this book is very frustrating for students (and sometimes for me). The images are, as a collective, either not detailed enough or too detailed to be useful. I like some aspects of the book, like the space devoted to clinical applications of the brainstem and cranial nerves. I like the book well enough for my purposes, but undergraduates find it disorganized and jumbled (there are a lot of seemingly unrelated topics jammed into one chapter), whereas I can see the idea behind the grouping of specific topics. This makes a professors job even harder as we try to digest information into little bits, and neuro is HARD for students.

Overall, I would not recommend this to beginners in neuroanatomy (I use Nolte's The Human Brain for that). Clinically, it is fine for undergraduates, but I will use Lundy-Ekmans Neurorehabilitation book for my physical therapy students, but still will add the Nolte for anatomy and pathways. I hope this helps any professor out there who is looking for "THE BOOK" for clinical neuro. I have yet to find one book that does it all.

The notes that my professor uses go along with the book almost word for word. However, the book does give more depth of information than PowerPoint slides. Very helpful for neuro anatomy!

Excellent book for its time.
By P. Mulloy
For those who criticize this book for being dated - it was first published in 1960. For its time it was a groundbreaking and important book covering the issues of youth. This is an important book for understanding the 1960s and early 1970s and the issues that drove that generation. Many of the problems Goodman writes about have never adequately been addressed and still gnaw at us today. Any author who can maintain his relevance in terms of coming to terms with his own time and still have some relevance half a century later, I think, has done an outstanding job.

Looking Back in Disbelief
By Donna Miller
Oddly enough, I have been telling people for years how much I loved the ideas I encountered in this book at college. When I reread it now, I simply can't believe I wasn't screaming about the author's attitude towards women. It is definitely a time capsule experience of an unawakened sensibility.

No "job of work" that is worth doing.
By not a natural
I read Growing Up Absurd in 1967, a few months after I got out of the army, having served my two years as an active duty draftee. I was working as a shipper-dispatcher in a large bakery: I unloaded baked goods from large trucks and distributed them among much smaller trucks for delivery to homes and stores. At the time, that kind of job paid enough to raise a family in which the other spouse worked at her discretion. Working class had not yet devolved into working poor. I drank coffee, smoked cigarettes, and ate chocolate eclairs with the truck drivers. The work got done, but there were no time-and-motion study industrial engineers gauging my efficiency. The job was not the sort that you took home. As an occupational bridge between the army and a state university, I thought it was all pretty good. The job made a simple but solid sort of sense, It seemed useful. After reading Paul Goodman's book, I began to wonder why I was aspiring to anything of higher status and income, the kind of work that demanded one or more university degrees.

In retrospect, however, it's good that I was determined to be upwardly mobile. The kind of job I had in 1967 may or may not still exist, but it certainly does not pay the bills which accumulate when raising a family. Working class and working poor have, indeed, become coterminous. This is not something that Goodman foresaw, but in the '60's neither did anyone else except an occasional Marxist who didn't think Keynesian fiscal policy would work well forever.

Even in the '60's, however, and with regard to the hardy and conventional working class, Goodman raised pertinent, and entirely new to me, questions such as "Why would anyone find satisfaction in working as a mechanic repairing trucks that delivered the New York Times?" I was still sufficiently naive that I thought the New York Times was a class act, disseminating truth and, occasionally, wisdom; keeping us free by keeping us informed. I couldn't imagine anything better than the interesting and manly work of a skilled mechanic laboring to assure that all the news fit to print was widely disseminated.

Goodman, however, introduced me to the banality of the world that the times maintained, and the crass materialism that provided rewards for continued, uncomplaining participation. Yes, Goodman respected what Veblen called the instinct of workmanship, but he also saw that it had been perverted to serve meaningless ends and to maintain the hegemony of the emptiness of expensive trinkets and fatuous titles. We lived in a comparatively affluent world, but one in which work was being degraded, generating alienation and normlessness, fostering a drab and desolate existence in which most of us learned that what we did paid the bills but otherwise was not worth doing.

Five decades later, Goodman's analysis is even more accurate and compelling. The world of work is shot through with even greater doses of meaninglessness. To add injury to injury, most "jobs of work" don't even pay the bills. Somehow we've been persuaded that the flood of women into the labor force to do the same grunt work as men, and typically at a much lower level of compensation, has been a giant step toward sexual equality.

The longshoreman, autodidact, and author Eric Hoffer, writing during the same era as Goodman, was fond of extolling the virtues of work as an end in itself. He described the cargo he helped move as "crap," but stil found fulfillment in work.

Goodman was a good deal more critical. He characterized the work that Hoffer valued as absurd. Goodman was right then, and he's even more on target now. Though some of the details, lingo, and images in Growing Up Absurd are dated, the book remains well worth reading. I'm retiring this year, and, looking back, with the possible exception of the time I spent in the bakery, the work I have done -- and there has been a lot of it -- has been absurd. It paid the bills, but at what cost? No surprise to Goodman that the arc of a working life would be replete with questions such as this.

The Art of Poetry: How to Read a Poem, by Shira Wolosky

In The Art of Poetry, Shira Wolosky provides a dazzling introduction to an art whose emphasis on verbal music, wordplay, and dodging the merely literal makes it at once the most beguiling and most challenging of literary forms.

A uniquely comprehensive, step-by-step introduction to poetic form, The Art of Poetry moves progressively from smaller units such as the word, line, and image, to larger features such as verse forms and voice. In fourteen engaging, beautifully written chapters, Wolosky explores in depth how poetry does what it does while offering brilliant readings of some of the finest lyric poetry in the English and American traditions. Both readers new to poetry and poetry veterans will be moved and enlightened as Wolosky interprets work by William Shakespeare, John Donne, William Blake, William Wordsworth, Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, Sylvia Plath, and others. The book includes a superb two-chapter discussion of the sonnet's form and history, and represents the first poetry guide to introduce gender as a basic element of analysis.

In contrast to many existing guides, which focus on selected formal aspects like metrics or present definitions and examples in a handbook format, The Art of Poetry covers the full landscape of poetry's subtle art while showing readers how to comprehend a poetic text in all its dimensions. Other special features include Wolosky's consideration of historical background for the developments she discusses, and the way her book is designed to acquaint or reacquaint readers with the core of the lyric tradition in English.

Lively, accessible, and original, The Art of Poetry will be a rich source of inspiration for students, general readers, and those who teach poetry.

From Library Journal
Wolosky's guide is designed to introduce readers to poetry, the art form she calls "verbal music." In 14 chapters, she defines the small units of poetic form word, line, and image before moving into larger definitions of verse form and voice. The book includes a two-chapter discussion of the sonnet's form and history, as well as a discussion of gender as an element of analysis. To illustrate her theses, Wolosky (English and American literature, Hebrew Univ., Jerusalem; Language Mysticism) interprets poems by Shakespeare, Donne, Blake, Wordsworth, Dickinson, Frost, and Plath, as well as many other often-anthologized poets. The glossary is a useful reference tool, but the overall tone, while accessible, is academic, and a more contemporary listing of poets would have been better for the novice. General readers and poetry lovers will be better served by a good anthology, such as Elise Paschen and Rebekah Presson Mosby's Poetry Speaks (LJ 10/15/01). Recommended for academic libraries only. Review

"The project itself is both coherent and concise, relying on close readings of short, post-medieval poems...to introduce concepts of diction, syntax, metre, and rhyme. At its best, the book shows that clarity of discussion need not sell short depth of analysis, or complexity of awareness, and it is an excellent starting-point for any serious consideration of form in poetry, of what poetry does to language and what language is always ready to do to poetry."--Peter McDonald, Poetry Review

"The Art of Poetry is both a superb technical manual and an authentic guide to the art of reading poetry. With brilliance and extraordinary lucidity, Wolosky illuminates such essential matters as metaphor, poetic voice, and the crucial relation of rhetoric to poetic meaning. I cannot imagine a more useful and distinguished book of this kind." --Harold Bloom, Yale University

"Wolosky has written the best basic treatment I know of the art of poetry. Wolosky structures the book brilliantly, and makes the process of learning about textual virtuosity and semantic complexity a joy. She builds her explications from the ground up (or from the surface down), always with attention to what it means to make a student get into a poem step by step. I have learned a great deal from this work, though I've been teaching poetry for twenty years. This is a genuinely important book, and I predict it will become in short time a standard text for teaching poetry."--Sacvan Bercovitch, Harvard University

"Here is a generous Art of Poetry for the modern English-speaking world. How tellingly Shira Wolosky moves from matters of taxonomy to those of technique, from the rudiments of poetic form to the resonance of poetic voice and point of view--from praxis to theory and back, from literary history to the experience of the literature itself. For at every step the author supports her claims with readings of individuals poems that are close and adept, eloquent and acute. This book is a welcome gift, an arresting vade mecum for student and teacher, reader and writer alike."--Robert Fagles, Princeton University

"Shira Wolosky's comprehensive and lucid practical introduction to what makes poems poetic also provides a sophisticated and informative look at theoretical poetics in all its aspects. Its annotated bibliography alone will give interested readers of all sorts a good sense of what scholars, critics, and linguists have had to say about poetry during the twentieth century. It is rare that an elementary study can also be as useful for advanced students and teachers of poetry as this well-worked-out exposition, clearly written and free of pseudotheoretical jargon."-- John Hollander, Yale University

About the Author
Shira Wolosky is Professor of English and American Literature at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Poetry undressed
By S. E. Miller
The best book on poetry explication I've ever seen! As a student or just someone who loves poetry, this text breaks down the elements of poetry in a clear and almost poetic way to aid in the understanding of what poetry is. Throughly enjoyable to read. Lots of examples of classic poetry are explicated line by line to show how poets do what they do and the importance of each syllable. A great book and fabulous resource.

Historical Geography of Crop Plants is devoted to a variety of staple and food crops, as well as fodder, fiber, timber, rubber, and other crops. The origins and histories of many of these crops have been clarified only recently by new research. The book has been arranged alphabetically by family and higher taxa for easy reference. Within families, species and cultivars are listed chronologically and geographically. The taxonomy and geography of probable wild progenitors have been outlined, and archeological evidence (when available) and historical evidence on region and domestication are traced. The subsequent evolution and spread of many domesticated species are examined, and the reasons behind the diversity in crop histories are explored. Historical Geography of Crop Plants will be a useful reference for botanists, economic botanists, ethnobiologists, agronomists, geographers, and others interested in the subject.

"Sauer's book manages to integrate historical geography and the plant geography of crop domesticates as has no other recent monograph, just as surely as it crafts a classic compendium." - Annals of the Association of American Geographers, Volume 8, Number 4, 1994

A select book
By P. van Rijckevorsel
This is a scholarly summary of what is known about the origins of our prominent crop plants; botanically and geographically. This book is very carefully written and avoids any unnecessary ramifications. However it does contain a wealth of detail: why is one of the American cottons traded under the name of 'Egyptian cotton'? What is the crop with most sets of chromosomes? Etc, etc. Highly recommend for those interested in the backgrounds of the worlds crops.
